But as Casey becomes more immersed in the Hill family dynamic, her quest for the truth leads her to another shocking murder that shatters her understanding of the human condition in ways she never could have imagined.
I’ve always loved Lucinda Berry’s books. She has a way of making a thriller that leaves you nervous and guessing. I really enjoyed it and yes I guessed a few things but it certainly didn’t detract from the story. There were a few things towards the end that I would have liked to have clarified (which happened to some people), but it was still a great read.
Under Her Care book is told from two perspectives. Casey Walker, a therapist who really works with autistic children. Genevieve Hill, homemaker and former beauty pageant winner. Genevieve is very controlling while Casey is more relaxed. One is nice and the other really bad. Or at least I think she’s pure evil. Both are women and both have children with autism.
Genevieve has two children. A daughter, Savannah Hill, who has many issues of her own, and a son, Mason, who has autism. Genevieve loves to control everything, but she does it in a way that makes her seem like a heroine. Like he’s the best person you’ll ever meet. I didn’t like her at all.
When the mayor’s wife is murdered, Genevieve and her son Mason find her. The police decide that Mason have done it because he’s a big boy and he has blood all over him. Lead detective Layne tricks Casey into helping them talk to Mason without his mother being present. A lot is discovered in the process. So many things that give you goosebumps. You will wonder how a human could do such a thing. Who would want to do these things. That’s all I can say as I don’t want to give anything away. But be prepared to cringe as you read. Get very angry.
How far will a person go to cover up their wrongdoing? Or to look good. Or innocent. This is a story you won’t soon forget. It contains a kind of child abuse that I can’t believe, but I’m sure it happened. But why. What would make a person so cruel?
There are many exciting parts in Under Her Care story. Lots of things happen that make you angry. A few tears along the way. Most importantly, you want to know who and why. Some might surprise you. Some could really make your skin tingle.
