William Blake Crouch born on October 15, year 1978 is an American author best known for his Wayward Pines trilogy, adapted into the year 2015 television series Wayward Pines.

Crouch was born in year 1978 near the Statesville, North Carolina. He attended North Iredell High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in year 2000 with degrees in English and creative writing.

Crouch published his first two novels, Desert Places and Locked Doors in year 2004 and year 2005. His stories have appeared in the Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Thriller 2, and other anthologies. In year 2016 he published the novel Dark Matter.

Crouch’s Wayward Pines trilogy (2012–14) was adapted into the television series Wayward Pines in year 2015. Another work, Good Behavior, premiered as a television series in November year 2016.

In year 2019, Crouch released another science fiction novel titled Recursion which received critical acclaim.

In year 2020, Crouch began working on a script to adapt Dark Matter into a film for Sony Pictures.

Blake Crouch’s “Upgrade” is a master class in writing an engaging, captivating, page-turning work of art. It’s a book that makes you call work and say you’re sick because you can’t put it down…and I may be speaking from experience. Like Mr. Crouch’s other recent titles like Dark Matter and Recursion, this book is a clever mix of genres, from sci-fi to suspense, medical thrillers to dystopian fantasy. Our protagonist is likable but flawed, and the villain is nuanced and relatable to a degree.

World building is meticulous and the supporting characters are brought to life through Mr. Crouch’s skillful writing. The only reason I give it 4.5 stars out of 5 is for the moments when the technical writing overwhelms the narrative as I got a little lost with all the acronyms. After a while I just skimmed these parts and I don’t think I missed any of the experience.

Our narrator plays in the not too distant future, Logan Ramsay, an agent for the American Genetic Protection Agency (GPA). About twenty years before the book began, a revolutionary DNA-modifying biological system called the Scythe was discovered and patented. Its introduction had ushered in a new era of gene editing and transfer around the world, with disastrous results as well. See, there was a bacterial leaf blight affecting indica rice plants in Zhao Qing, China.

The scientist who created Scythe decided that by genetically modifying locusts, which transmit a virus to paddy fields, the genetic modification could increase the plants’ resistance to rot without making any other changes. While the lab results worked perfectly, the actual application had devastating results as viral control systems evolved mutations that caused genes needed for seed production to be eradicated from the plants. The virus then spread and interspecies viral transmission began, infecting and attacking other food crops.

For the next seven years, each growing season yielded less and less, and before the locusts were finally eradicated, China’s strategic grain supply was critically depleted.
The famine spread to every continent and affected everyone in one way or another. If you destroy millions of acres of crops, you will change where the rain falls. If you destroy paddy fields, you destroy everything she needs to live.
Two hundred million people starved to death, but that number comes nowhere near the full impact of the chaos we unleashed. The downstream impacts on economies, health systems, entire species, and the biosphere itself were incalculable. ‘

This time it became known as The Great Starvation and resulted in unauthorized gene editing being banned. The GPA was formed to track down dark gene labs and the scientists who operate them illegally, to ensure nothing like what happened in Zhao Qing can ever happen again. Logan sees his time at the GPA as a penance. When she was younger, she wanted to be a geneticist and follow in the footsteps of her world-famous mother, Miriam Ramsay. While Miriam was an absolute giant in the field of genetics with an unparalleled mind and ambition, she was also the creator of Scythe and the virus that caused The Great Starvation.

In a raid on a dark genetics lab, Logan is injured and wakes up in the hospital with serious injuries and at risk of exposure to a man-made virus. After experiencing dangerous flu-like symptoms, including a temperature of 106.1 F, Logan is stripped of any DNA modifications and released from isolation. Returning to his loving family, wife Beth and daughter Ava, he is smoothly adjusting to home life while recovering from his injuries and looking forward to returning to work.

The only problem is that you have intermittent deep bone pain that seems to have no cause. This is the first sign of the extraordinary changes taking place in Logan’s body. He soon reads faster, reads micro-expressions on people’s faces, and understands material beyond his previous comprehension. As the “Update” continues, Logan is captured by the GPA, incarcerated and examined by the very people he has dedicated the last fifteen years of his life to, and begins to understand the fear driving the agency and its superiors.

Logan escapes but is unable to return to his family for fear of putting them in danger. Instead, he embarks on a journey to find out who hacked his genome and forced him to “upgrade” and what the ultimate goal is. In doing so, he realizes that the future of the whole world is teetering precariously on the edge of the abyss, without change the planet and humanity are doomed in the next hundred and fifty years. But the question is what changes are needed to ensure the survival of the humanities. As Logan wrestles with what to do, he must confront how much of himself he is willing to sacrifice to protect his family.

Ultimately, this book is a warning to all of us about how fragile our world is, and without change we will doom our children to the end of human civilization as we know it. The gripping narrative has a deep message at its core. That it is time to address and take responsibility for the mistakes of our past to ensure we all have a future. It never felt like Mr. Crouch was lecturing the reader; Instead, the threads of social responsibility have been deftly woven throughout history.

Overall, “Upgrade” was just a masterpiece. The writing is compelling, the characters are brilliantly executed, and the world-building is perfectly done. Yes, this book carries a message about our likely future if we don’t change our habits, but don’t let that distract you. It’s still an amazing story, the action is fast paced, the plot is captivating and it’s everything I could have hoped for from Blake Crouch. Be careful, you will run away with emotions reading this book, but in the end it will give you hope. I have to say that I am in awe of Mr. Crouch’s talent and look forward to reading everything he has written.
