The story revolves around Charles Vincent, who is married with two successful children and a well-paying job; but he is currently stuck in an unhappy marriage. His wife (Isabelle) never works, spends money, enjoys being considered rich, and lives a glamorous life. Charles was in publishing and made a lot of money until he quit his job and money became an issue for two years, with Charles borrowing money from his wife’s father; his wife constantly threatens divorce. Charles eventually gets another job and earns even more money, but he doesn’t like the job or his boss.

One night, Charles’s boss keeps him late, and as he drives down the coast to his magnificent castle for the weekend, he falls asleep at the wheel and falls off a cliff into the sea. Anticipating his death during the fall, Charles manages to survive and is badly injured running desperately in the dark to find help. He passes a hut where he meets a kind woman, Aude, who tends to his wounds and allows him to rest and sleep in her hut.

In a very short time, Charles begins to discover passions that he never had, and both Aude and Charles fall in love. Presumed dead, Charles really realizes that he can choose to disappear and also have a happy life with Aude. Everyone thinks he’s dead, the funeral is over and the lawyers are working on his will. Charles will find out that Aude has some secrets from her past that will threaten her life.

After many months have passed, Charles and Aude must decide together what is the best path for their life together. Will they disappear forever or will Charles have to make amends to face his family?

“Without a Trace” was an interesting and slightly different kind of story, with all the focus on Charles’s unhappy life, at least until he meets the woman who will change his life forever. What follows is a thrilling and tense final third of the book, in which Aude’s past comes back to haunt her; and anyone who knows the truth about Charles’ disappearance.
