This reviewer was attracted to this 2016 book titled: “101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think” by Brianna Wiest because of its catchy title and good reviews. In fact, there were 101 Essays and some of them truly thought-provoking that make the book worth buying and reading.
All the essays were short and some of them were excellent and “on the mark”.

Other essays seemed more appropriate for a self-help therapy session book that may or may not apply to the reader. Some of the essays were fascinating and some were a struggle to finish reading. One of the 101 essays is titled: “101 Essays That Will Change Your Mind”, i.e. the exact same title as the book, which rather begs the question of what the other 100 essays will add.

Sometimes the book provided sources used to influence the author’s essays. Sometimes scholarly references were in footnotes. There were several features of the book, as published in Kindle format, that disappointed this reviewer. In terms of formatting, when highlighting sections to be extracted (as allowed by the publisher), the numbers were somehow embedded in the format and were NOT highlighted for extraction.

As an example of the author’s substance and style, Wiest writes, “In his book Sapiens…Harari explains that at one time there was more than just Homo sapiens roaming the Earth…There is a reason Homo sapiens it still exists today and the others don’t continue to evolve: a prefrontal cortex,… it was thanks to language and thought that… we were able to create a world inside our minds and ultimately it is thanks to language and thought that we have evolved to the society we have today…”

Wiest writes that: “Each generation has a kind of ‘monoculture’, a type of ruling pattern or belief system that people unconsciously accept as the ‘truth’… The objectivity required to see the effects of today’s monoculture is very difficult to develop. Once you have so deeply accepted an idea as “true”, it no longer registers as “cultural” or “subjective”… The foundations of any given monoculture tend to surround what we should be living by… Do you think creating your best life is a matter of deciding what you want and then going after it, but in reality, you are psychologically incapable of predicting what will make you happy… You extrapolate from the present moment because you believe that success is somewhere in you . “arrive”, so he is constantly trying to take a snapshot of his life and see if he can still be happy… he convinces himself that any given moment is representative of his life as a whole.

Because we are programmed to believe that success is somewhere we arrive, when goals are achieved and things are completed… Achieving goals is not success. How much you expand in the process is…. You think that “problems” are obstacles to achieving what you want, when in reality they are paths… Simply encountering a “problem” forces you to take action to solve it.”

Wiest writes: “The psychology of the daily grind…what we don’t realize is that having a grind doesn’t mean you sit in the same office every day for the same number of hours. Your routine could be traveling to a different country each month… In short, routine is important because habituality creates a mood, and the mood creates the “nurture” aspect of your personality, not to mention leaving you driven by impulsiveness… routine is so important (and happy people tend to follow them more)… Your habits create your mood, and your mood is a filter through which people experience their life.. Happiness is not about how many things you do, but it is about how well you do them. More is not always better… As children, routine gives us a sense of security. As adults, it gives us a sense of purpose.”
