This is a beautifully written and remarkably moving novel. I wish with all my heart that I could give this five stars, but unfortunately that’s impossible given the last quarter of the book or so. A Book of American Martyrs begins strongly with the shooting murder of a doctor and an abortion center volunteer. From then on, depending on your point of view, you will be led into the hearts and minds of those surrounding the event, the tragedy, or the murder.
Joyce Carol Oates begins the book from the perspective of assassin Luther Dunphy, who shows up on that fateful day and puts a shotgun to the two men’s heads, killing them instantly. And from there it becomes an exploration of the debate on abortion, justice and the death penalty, religion and family, grief and loss. I found it quite remarkable how well each of the different characters was portrayed in all their flaws and glory; It must not have been easy to write from such contrasting character perspectives and still manage not to fall into stereotypes or caricatures.
In fact, the whole thing is masterfully handled. Oates rotates between characters, but each character’s narrative is told through how they see themselves and, indeed, how others see them. Similarly, the writing style changes drastically at points, and while this could have been annoying, it was done so well that I can only applaud Oates for creating a novel that is also a work of art and doesn’t screw it up. . Each portrayal of the characters is presented in context with background and understanding, and yet nothing seems superfluous or unnecessary; in fact, it is some of these sections that give the novel as a whole such a rich and varied feel.
And it’s not just the big issues that Oates gets right, but she somehow obviously doesn’t put her helm anywhere. The characterizations and family dynamics are beautifully drawn here, with two families losing the center of their home. One to tragedy (or murder because he was a baby killer…), the other to prison.
The novel takes you through the heart of the drama with the court proceedings and all the complexities and delays, the different points of view and conflicts, and then it takes you into the families. Two families from two very different walks of life trying to navigate this new and uncharted world…and let’s face it, they’re doing very poorly. Families split and fall apart under the pressure, both dealing with very different but somehow similar issues.
The novel finally zooms in and focuses on the two eldest daughters of both families, who narrate them through adolescence and then adulthood. There are parts that are actively disturbing in their deep look into the darkest aspects of society, sections that took my breath away, some descriptions that are heartbreaking and undeniably powerful.
At no time does Oates forget the family ties and relationship dramas that have been built, but rather he continues to build on them, even if he lets the focus of the story become much more focused.
So why only four stars? Because the last 150-200 odd pages were lackluster compared to what came before. They go from this really persistent and skillfully crafted narrative of many current works and concerns to two hundred pages, which is really not much.
I enjoyed them, there is no doubt about that. They are well written, I can’t deny it. But they are not of the same caliber as most of the novel. You lose focus and instead become bland. I found the actual ending both interesting and surprising, but I could have done it without name pages, cultural education, and second thoughts.
Regardless, this is moving, beautifully written, and incredibly powerful.
