Natalie owns a golf course and a small restaurant. She becomes wary of relationships after her husband, son, and parents are killed in a car accident. But learning that her husband was not who she claimed to be could be an even bigger shock. Because of this, she keeps to herself, not going out and raising her young daughter while she tries to keep his golf course and her restaurant running with minimal help in order to save money.

Valerian is an immortal enforcer who works for the Argeneau family. He golfs at night, and although Natalie finds it strange, he’s a paying customer, so she doesn’t say anything.

Valerian is golfing one night when his golf cart runs out of gas and he ends up saving Natalie after everyone thinks it was just an accident. He’s been keeping to himself all these months, he’s been golfing there, so he’s never met Natalie, but once he walks up and meets her, he’s sure she’s her date. But that can be very difficult with a mortal and even more difficult for her since he doesn’t want to get involved with anyone.

However, once Valerian thinks she’s in danger, he summons the troops and they just take care of her and let her know that she may be in danger. He knows everyone is there to protect her and little Mia, so he’s a lot less reticent when people start taking over her life than I am in the same situation.

Gradually, she realizes that Valerian is a nice guy, and she’s attracted to him, and thinks he might be attracted to her, too, but she still takes things slow…for a while. Once they give in to her feelings, there’s really no turning back until she finds out what he is. She doesn’t take it well at first, not that he really blames her. Although it takes her a little while to trust him and the others, it is really Valerian’s sister who helps her in this.

Meanwhile, they try to track down serial killer The Angel Maker, who they believe is behind the dangerous scenarios that befell Natalie. This is the 35th book in this series and I really enjoyed this book as much as the other books in this series.

Enforcer Valerian is exhausted. His last missions were brutal. All he wants now is some time off and a chance to relax. Nothing is more relaxing for Valerian than golf. Every night he enjoys a round at dusk. The last thing he expects is to discover that the seductive owner of the golf course is his partner.

Natalie has no time for a relationship. She has her hands full managing the golf course and raising her young daughter. Valerian knows that gaining his trust will not be easy. He has to go slow to woo her the old-fashioned way. He hasn’t even thought about how to let her know that he’s an immortal.

As with most well thought out plans, circumstances conspire to throw obstacles in the way. When Valerian discovers threats from his latest mission, which requires me to focus on Natalie, he decides Slow won’t work. He must always be one step ahead of danger to protect Natalie and have the opportunity to get lucky at all times.

I have been a fan of Argeneau Immortals ever since I first bought Single White Vampires all those years ago. I think it’s great that the series never looks old fashioned. After the Bite has all the sarcasm, romance, and confusion we’ve come to expect and crave in an Argeneau story.

Those who have never read any of the previous books in the series can read this story without too much confusion, but the experience will be richer if they go back to the beginning. You will be lost in the world of the immortals of Argeneau from the first chapter.
