In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through the brilliant feelings and experiences that define what it means to be human. As he maps essential skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connections, he gives us the language and tools to reach a universe of new options and second chances, a universe in which we are braver and heartbroken. stories of moments each other in a way that builds relationships.

Brown shared, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research on the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be adventurous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as on Brown’s prodigious skill as a storyteller, to show us that correctly naming an experience doesn’t dominate the experience: it gives us the ability to understand, make sense, and the like. gives power.

This book is being grouped into a growing list of self-help literature, where it is not. Atlas of the Heart is a compilation of a ton of research on emotions, brought together in a beautiful and presentable way. This information can be written in the form of a peer-reviewed journal article and many social scientists/professionals will benefit from its findings. Unfortunately, those things can be boring and a lot less accessible, and people don’t naturally enjoy reading peer-reviewed scientific journals… I find Atlas of the Heart a lot more fascinating.

If you are reading this book expecting direct instructions on how to improve your life, you are missing out. Brené Brown is a professional researcher, not an author of self-help books. In her research, she found that we are losing a large part of our ability to be vulnerable, and that is our emotional expression. As a physician I can attest to this; When I ask someone to express how a situation made them feel, most people really struggle to find the words.

On her introductory page xxi, Braine says, “Imagine if you have such severe pain in your left shoulder that it actually stops your breathing. The pain prevents you from working, sleeping, and participating fully in your life.” When you finally get to the doctor’s office and she asks what’s up, all of a sudden you have duct tape over your mouth and your hands are tied behind your back.

You try to scream through the tape and clap your hands. You’re inches and minutes away from help and potential relief, but you can’t communicate or explain the pain. that in that situation most of us would fall to the floor in despair or throw ourselves into the room in panic. Uncontrollable. Anger. This is what can happen to us when we can’t express our feelings. We feel hopeless. or feel a destructive level of anger.”

This book helps with opening hands and removing tape, it doesn’t promise to be a doctor with a prescription. Read this book to communicate your pain and open the way to more vulnerable relationships with others (and with yourself). It is one piece of the puzzle, but the puzzle will never be complete without it.
