A week earlier, the man had met a five-year-old girl with cancer late at night in a hospital. She’s a smart kid, smart enough to know that she won’t beat cancer by drawing with crayons all day, but she seems to make adults happy, so she keeps going.

As the man tells his son about this brave little girl, he gradually reveals more about himself: Despite being a successful businessman who is idolized by the media and his peers, he knows he failed as a father.

Overwhelmed by the responsibilities of fatherhood, he took the easy route and left his wife and son 20 years ago to seek professional success. Now he wonders if it’s too late to start a relationship with his son, who seems to be his opposite in every way: happiness is more important to him than money, surrounded by loving friends in a welcoming city that is his home feels.

Faced with the idea that something is missing, the man is presented with an unexpected opportunity to do something selfless that could change the fate of the girl in the hospital bed. But before he can make the deal of his life, he must find out how much his own life was really worth in his son’s eyes. And so he looks for him and tells him this story….

Written with the humor, compassion, and “ability to weave stories that are believable and imaginative” of Fredrik Backman (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), The Deal of a Lifetime reminds us that life is a fleeting gift , and our only legacy as we share that gift with those we love.

Fredrik Backman’s strength surprises us with books that at first glance don’t sound overly sensitive, but ultimately their meaning touches the core of our being. What is really important in life is the central idea of this novel. Although the book begins with these words: “Hello. it’s your father, you’ll wake up soon, it’s Christmas Eve morning in Helsingborg and I’ve killed someone’, the story is about victims.

The father writing the above words is a successful businessman who neglected and alienated his wife and son because he placed more importance on wealth, fame and success. However, his son made different choices and became a nice person, unlike his father.

The father, in his forties, has cancer and while he is in the hospital, a little girl with cancer in the next room befriends him. The man recounts his time in the hospital and his experiences, observations and insights while simultaneously hinting at something supernatural. He also writes that he feels he has let his son down.

Saying more about his victim would mean revealing the plot.

Father’s words are sometimes harsh but also insightful, while the perspective of this book is unique and moving.

All I can add to this review is that I would be missing out on something important if I didn’t read it, and if I were creating a curriculum for anything from upper middle school to college-level reading, this book would be at the top of the list required reading list.
