AN ENDLESS WAR. The man known only as B. is half mortal and half god, cursed and forced to violence… even at the cost of his sanity. But after wandering the world for centuries, Berzerker may have finally found sanctuary: working for the US government to fight battles too violent and dangerous for everyone else.

In return, B. is granted what he wants: the truth about his endless, blood-soaked existence… and how to end it. Keanu Reeves makes his debut as a comic book writer alongside New York Times bestselling co-writer Matt Kindt (Folklords, Grass Kings) and legendary artist Ron Garney (Wolverine) in a brutal new series about a warrior’s struggle. Drama, intrigue and Keanu Reeves stabbing a man with a rib.

Still interested? you should be

I’ll start with the most depressing part of the review first because we should end on a high note. Do not go yet! I don’t read a lot of comics, but I buy a trade paperback every other month of something I like. Keep that in mind when I make my first critical statement. I had to read the first few pages a few times to get used to the flow of the dialogue and who is speaking. Once I figured out how the color coding worked, it was easy to read and the flow was fine.

However, I wasn’t a big fan of how it was implemented. I realize this is probably just because I’m not really new to comics, but it is what it is. The second critical statement that should be obvious is your niche. There is a truly amazing and amazing amount of violence. If that’s not your thing, you won’t enjoy it. If you are squeamish, you will actively refuse. So, you know, not for everyone (thankfully I’m not for everyone).

Bleeding on this last critical comment, I’ll deliver my first eulogy: There is a truly amazing and amazing amount of violence. Nobody will accuse BRZRKR of beating around the bush. The aforementioned scene where Mr. Reeves uses his hand to pull out a rib from a man who was alive up to that precise moment and then stab another person to death… well I saw that and started laughing. with evil joy. Sometimes it’s refreshing to see a product so boldly stand up for what it is.

The next compliment I got was actually for the story. No, it’s nothing new, covert government agencies, corrupt scientists and the unstoppable warrior. Although some people have pointed out that it’s a trope, it’s worth recognizing that some of the story elements are tropes for a reason. They resonate well with audiences, and some of the tropes here have been around for as long as we’ve recorded stories. I’ll avoid going into the details of why I think the backstory treatment made it significantly more interesting than many of the other similar stories because, spoilers.

However, I can say that I found it satisfactory and I hope they can successfully complete some of the themes seen. My last plus is the art. I was a bit disappointed with some panels but overall they were illustrated and colored in a way that highlighted the action, showed fluidity and kept me very entertaining.

What a really entertaining and intriguing graphic novel. The tone the writers captured here felt like delving deeper into Marvel and DC’s biggest, grittiest action thriller series and cranking it up ten notches. The balance between the intensity of the action sequences and the deep character development was so perfect in this story, and while the art (which was so visceral and amazing to look at) was definitely raw and intense, the violence spoke volumes. the power that corrupts those who wield it and the harm it inflicts on people, or “living weapons” wielded by those in power.

The characters were the real engine behind this story. The protagonist, known simply as B at the beginning of this story, was a very interesting character to discover. If someone mixed Marvel’s Wolverine with DC Comics Vandal Savage and added a touch of magic and action movie flair, they’d get B. The interesting character study allows readers to see the brutality he was born into and what he causes. and yet the trauma that comes with being used over and over again as nothing more than a weapon speaks to whether morality and choice are something we are born with or something we must fight for.

From authors Matt Kindt and Keanu Reeves, BRZRKR is a truly immersive, hauntingly entertaining and gripping graphic novel that is a must-read in 2021. The perfect read for anyone looking for comics outside of mainstream studios and looking for a real action experience. Blending mythology, history and chilling insights into the nature of war as a whole, this narrative ends on a captivating cliffhanger that will continue to draw readers into this universe.
