All Pen wants is to be the kind of girl she’s always been. So why does everyone have a problem with this?

They think that the way she looks and acts means that she is trying to be a child, that she should stop being something that she is not. If she dresses like a girl and does what her parents want, that will show respect. When she takes orders and does what her boyfriend Colby wants from her, she shows her loyalty.

But respect and loyalty, Pen discovers, are empty words. Old world parents, dissolving friendships, and strong feelings for other girls lead Pen to realize the truth: that to be who she truly wants to be, she has to have a man.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started Girl Mans Up and as the story unfolded I wasn’t sure in a good way. Girard does an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing as he immerses us in family dynamics, complicated friendships, new love, and navigating queerness on multiple levels. I don’t play video games except Wii games, while Pen, the protagonist of Girl Mans Up, is a passionate gamer.

She is quite regarded as one of the boys among her male friends, and that’s how she likes it. But when he realizes that some of his friendships may not be based on loyalty (the same concept is instilled in him at home by his strict Portuguese parents, who insist he pay them Respeito), but rather on not-so-subtle coercive tactics, he begins to wonder who to ally with.

She also falls in love after many unrequited crushes on girls, and all of those issues, aside from abortion, are dealt with realistically. There are no standard characters here, no easy answers about gender, sex, family or love. Instead, she must make many difficult decisions, such as staying at home, where she feels misunderstood, or moving in with her older brother, Johnny, whom she adores. Pen isn’t a perfect character, but even when she makes mistakes, it’s nice because Girard put a lot of heart into her.

She stands her ground, insisting on her own representation and gender identity, not on what others want her to be or what is supposedly “easier” for the world to understand. And although the book is not “about” abortion, its treatment of the subject as deeply personal, confusing, and often lonely, is exquisitely treated here, making it both a fact of life and something the character contemplates that it is not taken lightly.
