An eight-year-old girl, Chelsea Compton, goes missing in Pine Valley, California, and for Detective Katie Scott, she is a gruesome reminder of the friend who disappeared from summer camp twenty years ago. Katie can’t shake the memories and vows she won’t rest until she finds out what happened to Chelsea.

But when Katie begins to investigate (her memories of PTSD being kept in check with the help of her trusty ex-military dog, Cisco), the case turns out to be a lot bigger and more shocking than she feared. Deep in the forest, he discovers a makeshift graveyard: a row of graves, each with a colorful teddy bear.

Following the trail of silk lining the coffins, Katie connects the graves to a stack of missing persons cases involving girls and finds a pattern no one else could see. Someone in Pine Valley has been kidnapping the town’s daughters for years, and Katie is the only one who can stop them.

Katie was offered a police clerk job by her uncle, a sheriff in her small hometown, and she gladly accepted. Everything is going well until he encounters a cold case. Four years ago, an eight-year-old girl went missing and has never been seen since. The girl reminds Katie of her own childhood friend who disappeared from summer camp over twenty years ago.

Katie begins investigating on her own and with a lot of thought and incredible wit, she finds the body of the missing child.

That is the good news. The bad news is a second body was found. The girls are in handmade coffins, dressed in a very pretty dress and holding a cute teddy bear.

Katie battles the lead detective who first investigated the disappearance, a man who absolutely hates that the newbie… who isn’t even a detective… has proven inept at his job. He has also found a connection to several other missing persons.

She knows there’s a serial killer out there who’s been killing for years without anyone knowing. And the closer he gets to the truth, the greater the danger he faces.

Someone has their eye on Katie and will stop her investigation in any way they can.

This is a well written crime thriller with lots of twists and turns and characters that kept me hooked to the plot. Katie is an amazing character…she is strong, independent and not easily frightened. The supporting characters are also well drawn and believable.

This is the start of a series and the reader will learn a lot about Katie’s backstory…her time in the military and how it influences her today. There are also chapters where the killer’s mind is out there without knowing who he is. Cisco is one of my favorites…a well trained German Shepherd with personality.

Katie Scott was happy to be home from duty where she was assigned to the K9 unit, mainly to find explosive devices with her partner Cisco. She was lucky that she was able to arrange for him to come home with her! But what should they do here now?

It wasn’t long before he was back in his old office. As soon as she heard about a missing girl case, she recalled one of the most traumatic experiences of her childhood… finding a friend, Jenny, at summer camp and initially disappointed that she hadn’t attended an event. . … and later, despite saying she would see her, Jenny again didn’t show up… Katie couldn’t escape the memories and now vowed she would find out what happened to Chelsea…

I imagine the writer’s biggest problem in a psychological thriller is “why” serial killers do what they do. Chase presents us with an “almost” painful sacrifice that we need to understand. He started building the coffins before setting out on a quest to find the perfect inhabitant… But the killings have to stop!

Initially, Katie started taking notes until she was ready to work cases again. But he always had the missing girl, Chelsea, in the back of his mind. And so, laying it down, he found that it was cases of colds that were in it. He could identify similar cases; She knew this was the start of putting together what could be put together to solve both current cases and potentially open cases!

Then he started asking questions about the cold cases… and he got the coolness of those who ran each case. As he continued to search the files, the tension grew and he felt himself losing control of his life; perhaps it was true that everyone who returned from duty experienced some form of PTSD. And one of those symptoms was dreaming, this time of a little girl turning to her and screaming, “Please help me.”

Katie gathered clues and identified potential areas where the victims may have been taken. In the meantime, the killer had found Dena, perfect for her new coffin… And in the end, the search paid off… Katie… with Cisco’s help, she found evidence that was more than she could ever have found. conceited…

Chase is already a favorite author of mine… Katie and Cisco are a great team and I look forward to their next series! Check it! Highly recommended.
