Colleen Hoover (Margaret Colleen Fennell) (born in December 11, year 1979) is an author of young adult fiction and romance.

In January 2012 she published her first novel Slammed. In December 2012, she published Hopeless, which topped the New York Times bestseller list. Many of her works were self-published before being picked up by a publisher.

Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulfur Springs, Texas, the son of Vannoy Fite and Eddie Fennell. She grew up in the Saltillo, Texas and graduated from the Saltillo High School in year 1998. In 2000 she married Heath Hoover, with whom she has three children. Hoover has a degree in Social Work from Texas A&M-Commerce. She worked in various teaching and social work positions before beginning her writing career.

In November year 2011, Hoover began her first novel, Slammed, with zero intention of publishing it. She was inspired by a songs lyric “decide what to be and go be it” from an Avett Brothers song, and “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise”. Because of this, she included the Avett Brothers lyrics throughout the story. After a few months, her novel was reviewed by book blogger Maryse Black and she was given a 5-star rating, and sales of her first two books increased rapidly.

Hoover published her first novel, Slammed, in January 2012 and a sequel, Point of Retreat, in February. They reached #8 and #18 on the New York Times bestseller list in August of that year. Atria Books picked them up and re-released them on August 10. A third book in the series, This Girl, was released in April 2013.

Hopeless was Sky’s story. Now we finally learn the truth about Dean Holder in Losing Hope.

Once again I blamed Colleen Hoover for my lack of sleep. I read this book through in two days and stayed up into the wee hours each time. It’s another of Colleen’s books that I just couldn’t put down. While I can’t say I enjoyed it as much as Hopeless, seeing the story from Holder’s point of view was amazing and I fell in love with the story all over again.

The only reason I didn’t enjoy it as much as Hopeless did is simply that Hopeless was surrounded by elements of shock and mystery as the truth about Sky was revealed bit by bit. But since Hopeless was more of a six star book than a five star book, I was still able to give Losing Hope a huge five stars.

I loved reading the letters Holder writes to his sister Les. He opened his heart in these letters and allowed us to really see what was going on in Hopeless’ mind and heart. While Hopeless would have worked on its own anyway, the addition of Holder’s point of view fixed everything nicely. Everything that happened in Hopeless made even more sense after reading this book, even the small details which I won’t go into so as not to spoil it for anyone.

While this is essentially the same story as Hopeless from Holder’s point of view, it also differs in many ways. We learn more about Holder’s past and the impact Hope’s disappearance and the death of his sister Les had on him. In this book we get to know the real Dean Holder thoroughly.

Losing Hope is the second installment in Colleen Hoover’s Hopeless series. The story is about Dean Holder, Sky’s friend in the first Hopeless book, and he’s basically telling his version of the events that take place in the first book.

From Hopeless we know that Sky isn’t Sky, it’s Hope. A girl who was kidnapped despite being told she was adopted and was raised with a secret lie. She meets Dean Holder, the person who turns her world upside down. They become friends, but the attraction is too great and they become a boyfriend/girlfriend. But Dean also has a secret. And that secret is that he knows Sky’s true identity, he witnessed her being taken away. In the story we can see Dean’s life with Hope during Hope’s disappearance and after.

I knew before Losing Hope that I liked the character of Dean Holder in Hopeless. But only after redeeming himself ten times in the middle of the book. He has this terrible secret that you don’t really know about until the end of the story. Then you find out that Holder already knows Sky, but he knows her by the name Hope.

The book explains all of his feelings towards Hope and the guilt that crushed him as a young boy for allowing his best friend to be kidnapped for not protecting her. But he also bears this guilt for his dead twin sister because he couldn’t save her. He begins writing letters to his sister, knowing that she cannot see them but as a form of therapy and pours his heart into her so you have no doubts about how he feels.

I liked that you can see it from the other perspective. It helps you to truly understand his actions, that how emotionally turbulent the whole going situation is for him, when he finally thinks he’s found Hope, then when he finds out more about his sister and what might have driven her to kill herself. It’s a more emotional read than Hopeless because Holder has experienced a loss, a loss a young child should not experience, and a loss a teenager should not experience. You will appreciate his story much more after reading this.

The story is not only full of emotions, but also very funny. Having access to Holder’s mind while interacting with Sky is fun, cute, and you know how Sky is reacting, so it’s like spying! I always feel like you’re spying on the guy when you read his point of view.

Definitely one to read after Hopeless.
