I saw this movie in the 90’s and after seeing it over 20 times over the years I finally decided to read the book. I always loved how Idgie’s mind flipped Evelyn’s mind, but I always thought the movie jumped too high. The book really jumps around and has four points of view instead of the two in the movie. Start with The Weems Weekly and you’ll hear narration from Dot Weems, another charming Southern personality who didn’t appear in the film.
It then deals with Evelyn’s current reality, Ninny’s storytelling, as well as scenes that were the Whistle Stop story but weren’t part of the stories Ninny told Evelyn. With so many different points of view and a timeline that isn’t quite chronological, it would have been easy to turn the story into train wreck mayhem, but the author avoided this by providing information in her trailer that made the story make more sense. . , As it was told.

It was interesting to readers of the book that Vesta Adcock, whose Whistle Stop story is not mentioned in the film, turned out to be Ed’s (Evelyn’s husband) aunt. There was much more to the Otis story, including how Sipsey became Big George’s mother, Big George’s children and his final story, and Smokey Robinson’s past and what became of him.
Some of it was kind of cruel and I can understand why it was left out of the movie. At the end of the book, you also get a glimpse of Ruth’s son Buddy and his family in 1986, who also doesn’t appear in the movie. Ninny is much more of a continuous narrator than she is in the book, but just like the movie, she’s a joy to listen to. She was imagining Jessica Tandy’s voice as she read.
Idgie’s brother Buddy is hit by the train while he is playing with his friends and chasing a hat on the tracks, but Buddy and Ruth were not in love with each other, in fact they never met. Buddy was in love with a sexually free woman named Eva whose father ran the Dill Pickle Club, where Idgie became a fixture after Buddy’s death.
Although there are no sex scenes written into the book, Idgie and Ruth were clearly in love and ended up living together, something that is hinted at in the film but not made clear. “You really love who you love” seems to be really a lesson Idgie learned from Buddy and Eva. The movie alludes to her affair with several different scenes, but she refrains from publishing them openly.
Ruth is already dead when Idgie is tried for the murder of Frank Bennett, and it is Smokey Robinson who comes to her rescue, leading Reverend Scroggins and all the gypsy drifters to come to her aid at her murder trial. Frank Bennett was even more of an idiot in the book than he was in the movie, and while the judge isn’t fooled by anyone, he has reason to be glad that Frank got what he’s done to him, dismiss the case, and Idgie lets him. Let’s go.
Ninny Threadgoode in this book is really not Idgie Threadgoode as the movie suggests at the end. Ninny Threadgoode comes home after Mrs. Otis dies, then at the end of the book you can see Idgie and her brother Julian running a fresh food stand since 1986, but from the circumstances you know Idgie isn’t Ninny .
I read a review somewhere that argued that Ninny and Idgie were the same person in the movie. Ninny would have wanted to keep her identity a secret as she told Evelyn about herself as the youngest Idgie. In both the book and the movie, Ninny was “adopted” into her family, leaving her free to fall in love with Buddy and eventually marry Cleo. Once the story was told and Evelyn was her friend, Ninny felt comfortable letting her into her wild life as Idgie.
If she enjoyed the movie, I think she can still decide which ending makes the most sense and she feels the best for you. I actually liked the end of the movie a lot more than the end of the book; I just found it warmer and more uplifting, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and wouldn’t recommend skipping it. As for me, I got the DVD of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes (Extended Anniversary Edition), which had scenes from the movie left out. i enjoy both
