The Kingsley family is an American royalty loved for their military exploits, political service, and unparalleled elegance. In 1967, after Joseph S. Kingsley, Jr. died in a tragic accident, his charismatic son inherited the weight of that legacy. But Joe III is bit of a free spirit and a bit of a reckless.

Despite his best intentions, he struggles to live up to the nation’s expectations, as well as those of his demanding mother, Dottie.

Meanwhile, nobody expected anything from Cate Cooper. She also grew up without her father, and after her mother marries to an abusive man, she is forced to fend for herself. After being spotted by a model scout at the age of sixteen, Cate decides her looks might be her only ticket out of the cycle of disappointment her mother has always inhabited. Soon, Cate’s face is in magazines and on billboards. And yet, she feels like a con artist faking it in a world she’s never belonged to.

Emily Giffin’s Meant to Be is a wonderful stand-alone novel loosely based on the Kennedy family; especially John Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. Meant to Be focuses on the Kingsley family, with young Joe Kingsley, who grew up as American royalty (similar to the Kennedy family), always in the public eye. His grandfather was a philanthropist, his grandmother a famous suffragist, and his famous father who was an astronaut but was in politics until his tragic death when Joe was 3 years old.

Understanding the expectations of his family’s legacy from him, Joe faces pressure from his mother and his best friend Berry (as a foster sister). Much to his mother’s annoyance, Joe liked to hang out with his friends; since he was an Adonis and very popular; he then he meets the girl of his dreams.

Cate Cooper, our heroine, also lost her father at the age of three while her mother was struggling to make ends meet until she meets a cop and gets married; that she hated Cate because she abused her mother. In high school, Cate was discovered by a modeling agency for her beauty, and her stepfather kept most of her money. Cate leaves home and school to pursue a successful modeling career; with her he became extremely famous as her face was everywhere.

One day during a photo shoot on the beach, Joe, who is walking his dog on Thursday, sees the group taking photos and immediately introduces himself to Cate. He gives him her phone number, but it will be some time before they accidentally meet again and they both feel the strong connection. If they go exclusive, Cate will be able to deal with the paparazzi constantly following Joe; putting them both in the spotlight as they were always being chased.

What follows is a beautiful romance that continues to unfold, with Joe and Cate having family problems of their own; how Joe and Berry’s mom doesn’t feel like Cate is right for him; and Cate’s stepfather is very abusive to her mother. He really loved Cate and Joe together and with some obstacles I worked hard to get over them. I also liked a lot of the supporting characters that we get to enjoy throughout the book.

Meant to Be was a touching and captivating romance that I couldn’t put down. The last quarter of the book was amazing and intense at times, but I loved the epilogue. Meant to Be was written very well by Emily Giffin. You have to read this wonderful story.

I don’t know from where to start with this story. I loved. I laughed, I cried, my jaw dropped at least once, and I partially leaned back on the edge of my seat.

Cate was young when her mother told her that her father had died. They remained close until her mother remarried Chip, a police officer who was abusing her and Cate’s mother. She grew up in a small town and got out as soon as possible. She moved to New York to pursue a modeling career before graduating from high school. Cate’s love life was practically non-existent. She had the occasional boyfriend here and there, but nothing serious or long-term.

On the other hand, Joe Kingsley III is part of one of the most famous and beloved families in America. His father also died young, but he was considered an American icon and hero, and Joe was expected to live up to those standards. He attended a prestigious university, then law school and became a lawyer in the district attorney’s office. His love life was everywhere and was closely followed by the paparazzi.

When Joe and Cate meet, they are immediately drawn to each other and have a strong connection with each other. Joe can’t get Cate out of his mind and Cate wonders why Joe never called. When they finally get back together months later, the connection is still there. But since Cate wants to stay away from the media and the tabloids, will her relationship survive the paparazzi and the constant attention Joe receives?

I really liked that this book is narrated from Joe and Cate’s point of view. I felt like it added more to the story and really got a feel for both characters and how they were feeling at the same time. I loved the story of Joe and Cate in general. It felt raw and real, and it really showed how much they cared for each other. His story was so captivating that I couldn’t put this book down.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you read romance novels, you must read this book.
