And then Carol shows up, flesh and blood, healthy, tanned, and thirty years old. Katy doesn’t understand what’s going on or how she can only focus on the fact that somehow, impossible, she got her mother back. Over the course of an Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her. However, she is not exactly who Katy imagined and soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young girl who is still clueless.

Rebecca Serle’s next great love story is here, this time between a mother and a daughter. With his signature “heartbreaking, redemptive, and authentic” prose (New York Times bestselling author Jamie Ford), Serle has written a transcendent novel about how we move on after loss and how the people we love never really leave us.

Did you know that a story about a 29-year-old could count as “coming of age”? Because I certainly didn’t know before reading One Italian Summer, but now I do.

Ever since reading In Five Years I’ve been a huge fan of Rebecca Serle’s truly phenomenal writing and her ability to weave magical realism into a story in the most natural way. I loved her storytelling from the start and cried throughout The Dinner List. The moment he announced this book, I added it to my TBR, and I’m glad I did.

The book begins with a quote from Lorelai Gilmore. And if you know me, you know that Gilmore Girls is my favorite series in the whole world, so of course that bodes well for a great book. In fact, the audio book is voiced by Lauren Graham and I had only read three chapters on my eARC when I pre-ordered this audio book because I knew I would want to listen it again and again.

Let’s start with some things to LOVE about One Italian Summer:
– will make you HUNGRY (I’m talking times when your stomach growls loudly at phenomenal descriptions of divine Italian dishes).
– will make you TRAVEL (couldn’t help but look for flights to Positano while I was reading because I’m now absolutely desperate to take a trip there and more importantly, stay at Hotel Poseidon Positano ).
– will make you crave ROMANCE (there are some overwhelmingly romantic vibes in this book and while they’re not the main focus, they’ve certainly made me appreciate my man even more).

  • it will make you cry (this was a given, knowing the nature of the book and the way it deals with pain and finds itself even after difficulties, but I still didn’t expect how much I felt sometimes would sob).

Really, really, honestly, the only thing I didn’t care about in this book was the focus on infidelity. What I can’t do is get too deep into this particular topic because it would lead to some major spoilers, but there were a few things that definitely made me uncomfortable. But even if this is a trigger for you, I urge you to try it because the ending is 100% worth it!

As always, Rebecca is the queen of magical realism and an excellent twist. Some have argued that saying there is a plot twist is a spoiler, but if you’re like me you get emotional hearing this so I’m keeping that in my review. My jaw practically hit the floor and it felt so good. I love being surprised by the book.

I have to come back to what I wrote at the beginning. This book is a coming of age book in many ways. Yes, that can happen at almost 30 years old. As someone who is only a year younger than the protagonist of this book, I can very well understand the feelings she was experiencing and even how she chose to deal with them. Nothing was perfect, not even close, and she learned a lot from the way she dealt with the grief of her mother’s death, her marital problems, and the desire to find herself after years of being like her mother she expected. It was beautifully written and I really appreciated the heart behind it.
