Janet Evanovich born on April 22, year 1943 is an American writer. She began her career writing short contemporary romance novels under the pen name Steffie Hall, but rose to fame writing a series of contemporary crime novels starring Stephanie Plum, a former lingerie shopper from Trenton, New Jersey who becomes a bounty hunter to make ends meet to come after he lost his job.
Novels in this series have been on the New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon bestseller lists. Evanovich has her last seventeen plums #1 on the NY Times bestseller list and eleven of them have reached #1 on the USA Today bestseller list. He has printed more than two hundred million books worldwide and his books have been translated into more than 40 languages.
Evanovich is a second-generation South River, New Jersey-born American train driver and homemaker. After attending the South River High School, she became the first in her family to attend the college when she enrolled at the Douglass College, part of Rutgers University, to study art.
When Evanovich had children, she decided to become a housewife like her mother. At thirty he began writing novels. In order to learn the art of dialogue writing, Evanovich took improvisation classes. For ten years she tried to write the Great American Novel and finished three manuscripts that she couldn’t sell. After someone suggested that she write romance novels, Evanovich read several and found that she liked the genre.
She wrote two romances and submitted them for publication. Still unable to find a publisher, Evanovich gave up writing and signed with a temp agency. A few months after she began working for her, she received an offer to buy her second love manuscript for $2,000, which she considered an “amazing sum”.
During the weekdays, Evanovich works eight hours or more a day. She usually works an additional four hours a day on weekends. She usually creates a short synopsis before starting a new book, with a sentence or two about what will happen in each chapter. After the release of a new book, Evanovich regularly goes on book tours. Her book signings attracted thousands of people. Beginning with her third book by Plum book, Three to Get Deadly, and ending with Smokin’ Seventeen, all titles were chosen from fan submissions.
Evanovich lives in Hawaii and North Carolina with her husband Pete, whom she married in year 1964. Her husband, son and daughter work for their company Evanovich Inc. Evanovich’s niece by marriage is the author Stephanie Evanovich.

This book is the first in a new action-adventure series about Gabriela Rose, a salvage agent who is paid to find things for her clients. Fans of Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series first encountered the exotic rose in Fortune and Glory, in which Gabriela competes with Stephanie in the quest for lost treasure (while also catching the attention of Stephanie’s friend Joe Morelli).
In The Recovery Agent, Gabriela is hired by her grandmother to find treasure hidden by the Spanish conquistador Pizarro. The centerpiece of the treasure was the Seal of Solomon, a ring said to have been engraved by God and given to King Solomon of the Old Testament. The ring supposedly gave Solomon the power to command demons and converse with animals. It was priceless, and Grandma Fanny wanted to use the treasure to fund the rebuilding of her village, which was recently destroyed by a hurricane.
Gabriela is forced to enlist the help of her ex-husband Rafer to find the treasure hidden somewhere deep in the Peruvian jungle. And of course she’s not the only one looking for it.
The Recovery Agent is a “light” action-adventure. Evanovich has a wacky sense of humor and of course something goes wrong with Gabriela and Rafer. Lots of people die, mostly tattooed drug dealers who worship the devil. I’m a little worried they’ll be sent without a second thought like it’s okay to kill them because they’re just drug dealers and less tattooed people who worship the devil. Hey, tattooed drug dealers who worship the devil are people too.
I’m addicted to Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, although I have to admit it’s not great literature. The Recovery Agent isn’t much literature either. But it’s a kick. If your standards are high, read Tom Clancy; If you’re looking for a distraction, then this book might be for you.
