Vera Chandler is a young pilot during World War II who hopes to join the Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron. But then her husband Hugh has a second assignment in the Pacific and she takes over her job as a private pilot for the wealthy Ellis family of Seattle. The Ellises define dysfunctional. Vera is hired days after Vincent and Priscilla’s three-year-old son, Max, is kidnapped.

None of the family, including Vincent’s brother Rex and mother Ruth, want the police involved. The delay proves disastrous and Max is still missing with no clues. As Vera struggles to understand the family dynamic, Priscilla enlists her help in finding Max. This and the many secrets the Ellis family hides will put them in grave danger.

Audrey J. Cole has delivered another unbeatable thriller. Combining mystery, historical fiction and impressive flight scenes, Only One Lie is full of well-described characters (some likable, some not) and offers some glimpses into the lives of the rich. In the final chapters, Vera Chandler admits that she would like to be a private detective. Audrey Cole, that’s a great idea.
