Colleen Hoover (Margaret Colleen Fennell) (born in December 11, year 1979) is an author of young adult fiction and romance.

In January 2012 she published her first novel Slammed. In December 2012, she published Hopeless, which topped the New York Times bestseller list. Many of her works were self-published before being picked up by a publisher.

Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulfur Springs, Texas, the son of Vannoy Fite and Eddie Fennell. She grew up in the Saltillo, Texas and graduated from the Saltillo High School in year 1998. In 2000 she married Heath Hoover, with whom she has three children. Hoover has a degree in Social Work from Texas A&M-Commerce. She worked in various teaching and social work positions before beginning her writing career.

In November year 2011, Hoover began her first novel, Slammed, with zero intention of publishing it. She was inspired by a songs lyric “decide what to be and go be it” from an Avett Brothers song, and “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise”. Because of this, she included the Avett Brothers lyrics throughout the story. After a few months, her novel was reviewed by book blogger Maryse Black and she was given a 5-star rating, and sales of her first two books increased rapidly.

Hoover published her first novel, Slammed, in January 2012 and a sequel, Point of Retreat, in February. They reached #8 and #18 on the New York Times bestseller list in August of that year. Atria Books picked them up and re-released them on August 10. A third book in the series, This Girl, was released in April 2013.

Hoover immediately draws the reader in with her stories, and the waiting time, as she writes from a first-person perspective, is incredibly engaging.

This story follows a mother and a daughter and their two love stories and how it all somehow intertwines at the center of it all. We have a mother who doesn’t want her daughter to repeat her mistakes by getting pregnant too young, but we also have a daughter who wants to break free from her parents’ overprotectiveness. The story moves back and forth from Morgan’s perspective (in the past and now in the present) to his daughter Clara.

We learn about Morgan’s relationship with Clara’s father Chris and how she was inseparable from Clara’s sister Jenny and Chris’s boyfriend Jonah. A tragic accident occurs and many things are revealed that have really shaken the family and Morgan has to deal with it along with Clara and Jonah. While all this is happening, Clara finds herself attracted to a boy who is known more for her father’s mistakes than for who he really is.

It’s an interesting dynamic because during this time of grieving, when Clara and Morgan should be looking at each other, they find they’re growing even further apart. So you can see how they meet again in the course of the book. I really liked all the characters, even if they frustrated me.

I was able to see why they acted in a certain way and while I didn’t always agree, I think it says a lot when someone can step back and understand why certain actions were carried out. Clara drove me a little crazy towards the end, but I understood that her anger stemmed from sadness and frustration at what she was facing. I don’t want to say too much to spoil the plot points, but it’s about three stories, Clara and Morgan’s mother-daughter story and then their respective romantic relationship stories. It sounds like a lot, but Colleen Hoover put it all together really well!

Regretting You book asks so many intriguing questions that it really amazes. Would certain relationships have grown if there were no special circumstances? Do you sometimes not understand who to end up with? And in relation to grief and death, how do you know when it’s appropriate to move on, or rather, how long you’ve been grieving? A lot is complicated here, from family dynamics, relationships (romantic and friendship) to grief and trauma. But also find yourself and chase your dreams.

Regretting You book will definitely break your heart multiple times, but I promise you that Colleen Hoover will end up fixing it all and getting it right somehow. It felt incredibly authentic, and while there’s definitely an HEA in some way, the Regretting You book emphasizes how relationships can change with certain factors affecting them, but it can definitely grow from that.

It reminds us that certain things in life are incredibly challenging, and ultimately it is the things that are most challenging that end up being the most rewarding. If you’re looking for a book that basically makes you feel ALL your emotions, Regretting You is definitely the read for you!
