Anyone looking for a spy thriller with plenty of action should find “the best for themselves” in “Rising Tiger”.

Author Brad Thor has written a robust and entertaining novel that examines the growing threat posed by China and its various initiatives and their impact on the rest of the world, most notably the United States and its key ally, India.

A silenced bullet to the back of the head kills the America’s secret envoy to the Indian government. A helicopter carrying the Indian Army’s head crashes for no apparent reason. In McClain, Virginia, an executive of a private intelligence company and his family are suddenly gripped by excruciating and excruciating pain, the cause of which is an enigmatic mystery as enigmatic as similar phenomena recently witnessed by Indian troops during maneuvers.

These are the threads author Brad Thor uses to weave the story of Rising Tiger, his 21st novel starring Secret Service agent Scot Harvath. What follows is a suspenseful espionage thriller with exotic locations, characters to savor and root for, more than a breathtaking action scene, some dark humor, geopolitics and a detailed and nuanced look at India.

I had never read any of Horvath’s novels before, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying Rising Tiger. Mr. Thor manages to get first-time readers up to speed quickly and efficiently.

Mr. Thor has much to say about democracy, the United States and its place in the world, the divisive nature of its press and politics, and the dangers of totalitarianism. While I disagree with a lot of what he says, it seemed a bit redundant and not well integrated into the story. However, unlike other novels, it is neither chauvinistic nor offensively “rah-rah America”.

On the other hand, Rising Tide contains a lot of very interesting information about India and the progress and growth it is experiencing and some of the challenges it is facing. It is also timely and offers a glimpse of some of the initiatives China is undertaking.

I finished the novel feeling like I learned something.
