Summer to me always means it’s time for a Susan Mallery book (or two!), and in addition to her previous The Summer Getaway (my review here), Mallery’s The Boardwalk Bookshop is here just in time for the weather. the beach.

Three women decide to rent a building on the California seafront. They each have their own businesses: Bree owns the Boardwalk Bookstore, Mikki has opened a tourist gift shop, and Ashley sells her delicious candy at the bakery.

Bree is a young widow and was raised by parents who had absolutely no interest in raising a child. They were too busy with their writing careers. Bree was left alone and wondered why her parents didn’t love her. She made her wary of others, unwilling to get close to anyone let alone go out with them.

Mikki is a divorced woman with two teenage children that she shares with her ex-husband. She gets along with her ex husband and her ex mother-in-law even works at her gift shop. It’s been three years since she got divorced and her friends are trying to convince her that it’s time for her to start dating. In this world of online dating, that’s daunting.

Ashley has the perfect boyfriend. She and Seth like the same things and agree on almost everything except the concept of marriage. Ashley wants to get married, Seth feels that they don’t need to be married to be happy in life.

While her business seems to be going well, her love life needs work. Ashley’s brother is a writer and she fears that he will fall in love with the beautiful Bree which will break her heart. Mikki considers sleeping with a man she met online, and Ashley is torn between her love for Seth and her desire for a serious marriage.

Friends gather every Friday night to share a bottle (or two) of champagne on the beach and reflect on their week. If you’re a fan of sparkling wine, they’ll give you great suggestions for different bottles to pick up at your local liquor store for your next gathering.

I really liked all the characters in this adorable novel. Mikki’s mother (who works with Bree) and her mother-in-law are wonderful characters, and the way all the women support each other is heartwarming. The men in this story are also interesting, well drawn, without stereotypes.

As someone who works in a bookstore, I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. I would like nothing more than to work at Bree’s bookstore on the beach, it would be heaven. Pack The Boardwalk Bookshop in your beach bag this summer, you’ll enjoy spending time with these three ladies.

The Boardwalk Bookshop follows the three friends, Mikki, Ashley, and Bree, as they work to build their their relationships, friendship, and their businesses. Mikki is the oldest at only 40 years old, she was divorced three years ago and is tired of being the passenger in her own life. Ella is slowly trying new things, and that now includes online dating, where she meets Duane, just as Ella Perry’s ex-husband says she thinks they should get back together.

Ashley is the youngest of the three, in her early twenties, madly in love with her boyfriend Seth and waiting for him to propose. When she finds out that he doesn’t believe in marriage and wants to live with her forever, Ashley must decide if she’s willing to give up her desire to stay with Seth. Bree is the most complicated: emotionally abandoned by her parents and her ex-husband, Bree never wants to put herself in a situation where her heart is in danger again, which means she has no chance of to love. But Ashley’s brother Harding is moving back to town and is determined that she will give them a chance.

We get to see how the relationships between the three women grow and deepen, from the beginning, when they have only known each other for a few months, to the end, when they are each other’s best support system and are ready to go beyond helping each other. through the hard times, but tell each other the truth as you see it, it’s not always convenient, but sometimes it’s necessary.

They understand each other better, help each other grow and support each other not only professionally but also personally. As each of them experiences the ups and downs of new relationships, the others are there to cheer or comfort as needed. This is a love story about the friends as much as it is about the romantic relationships, maybe even more.

This was a really strong book on many levels and it didn’t mince words. While Bree or Mikki could have successfully backed up a book on their own, I think the combination of all three stories worked well, in part because they’re so powerful. We get emotionally involved with the characters, we ride them on roller coasters and it helps us switch from one character to another and see a new perspective.

Whether taking them for granted, challenging their beliefs about themselves and life as they see it, or stepping into the unknown and uncomfortable, trying something new, a new perspective, a good friend, and a nice bottle of champagne on the beach they help many. to solve the problems of life.
