NYPD Lead Homicide Detective Michael Bennett and FBI Lead Kidnapping Specialist Emily Parker have priors.

Working on a case-by-case basis, each can predict the other’s next move. So when she doesn’t show up at the FBI headquarters in Washington DC, Bennett risks venturing out of her reach. The investigation she is conducting is the most brilliant detective work of her career…and the most personal.

The result is a portrait of a woman as adept at keeping secrets as she is at forging powerful connections. A woman whose enemies had both the means and the motives to silence the real Emily Parker and her protectors.

This book has 106 short chapters and a total of around 357 pages.

The book begins with Michael Bennett’s honeymoon in Ireland with his new wife. The story is told primarily from Bennett’s first-person perspective as he discovers his FBI friend Emily Baker is missing and heads to DC for clues. Bennett must use all of his detective skills and connections to try and track down Baker before it’s too late…

I should mention that he was not familiar with the character of Michael Bennett before reading this book; So a long-time fan of the character might find some references or Easter eggs in this book that I missed. Overall though, I enjoyed the book more. After a slow start, the action picked up in the middle; And while I didn’t really connect with most of the characters, the overall story was interesting enough to grab my attention.

There are a lot of setting-specific details that add some realism to the story, especially if you’re familiar with the DC realm. The ending was pretty decent, though it didn’t turn out the way I would have liked. I wouldn’t say this is one of my favorite Patterson books, but the short chapters certainly helped keep me interested as the scenes changed. All in all, a pretty good but not outstanding thriller that is easy to read.
