Long before John Grisham name became synonymous with the modern legal thriller, he worked 60 to 70 hours a week in a small law firm in Southaven, Mississippi, spending his time outside of the office and during court breaks to pursue his hobby: writing. his first novel.

Born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to a father and a housewife, John Grisham dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player from an early age. When she realized she didn’t have the right credentials for a career, she switched courses and majored in accounting at Mississippi State University. After graduating from Ole Miss Law School in 1981, he practiced law in Southaven for nearly a decade, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. In 1983 he was elected to the state House of Representatives, a position he held until 1990.

One day at the DeSoto County courthouse, Grisham heard harrowing testimony of a 12-year-old rape victim and was inspired to begin a novel exploring what would have happened if girl’s father had murdered her attackers. Rising at 5 a.m. In order to have several hours each day to write before going to work, Grisham spent three years on A Time to Kill and finished it in year 1987. Initially rejected by many publishers, it was eventually bought by Wynwood Press, who printed a modest edition for him with a print run of 5,000 and were published in June year 1988.

That could have ended Grisham’s hobby. However, he had already started his next book and would quickly turn that hobby into a new full-time career, sparking one of the biggest success stories in publishing. The day after Grisham finished A Time to Kill, he began work on another novel, the story of a young A-list lawyer who is lured into a seemingly perfect law firm that isn’t what it seemed . When he sold the film rights to The Firm to Paramount Pictures for $600,000, Grisham suddenly became a popular property with publishers, and Doubleday bought the rights to the books. The Firm spent 47 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and became the best-selling novel of 1991.

The successes of The Pelican Brief, which debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and The Client, which debuted at number one, confirmed Grisham’s reputation as a master of legal thrillers. Grisham’s success even renewed interest in A Time to Kill, which was even reissued in hardcover by the Doubleday and later in paperback by the Dell. And this time it was a bestseller.

Since first publishing A Time to Kill in 1988, Grisham has written at least one book a year (his other works include The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Chamber, The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury, The Partner, The Street Attorney, The Will, The Brothers, A Painted House, Skipping Christmas, The Subpoena, The King Of Pies, The Tribunes, The Last Jury, The Runner, Playing For Pizza, The Appeal, The Associate, The Confession, The Trials, Calico Joe, The Racketeer, Sycamore Row, Gray Mountain, Rogue Lawyer, The Whistler, Camino Island, The Rooster Bar, The Reckoning and The Guardians) have all become international bestsellers.

Grisham stopped writing for several months in 1996 to return to the courtroom after a five-year hiatus. He was fulfilling a commitment he made before retiring from the judiciary to become a full-time writer: to represent the family of a railroad brakeman who was killed when he got caught between two railroad cars. Grisham prepared his case with the same passion and dedication as the protagonists in his books and successfully represented his clients’ cases, earning them a $683,500 jury award, the largest verdict of his career.

When he is not writing, Grisham devotes himself to charitable causes, including most recently his Rebuild The Coast Fund, which raised $8.8 million to help Costa of the Gulf after the passage of Hurricane Katrina. He also cultivates his greatest passion: baseball. The man who dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player is now Little League’s local commissioner. The six baseball fields he built on his property played host to more than 350 kids on 26 little league teams.

This latest book by John Grisham is a collection of three novellas:
The first story is called “Homecoming” which has 39 chapters and 125 pages. This is the story of Jake Brigance.
The second story “Strawberry Moon” is shorter with only just 10 chapters and about 50 pages. The third and final story is “Sparring Partners” which has 48 chapters and 122 pages.

In “Homecoming” we return to the character of Jake Brigance; the lawyer we were first introduced to in Grisham’s first novel, A Time to Kill, in 1988. This is the fourth book Brigance has appeared in and this time the story is mostly about his lawyer friend Mack Stafford. Mack contacts Jake through a mysterious secret letter passed by friends and calls him to Costa Rica. There, Mack explains why he ran away and enlists Jake’s help to get home and make amends. This leads to a complicated story as Mack clearly made some bad choices and isn’t the most likable character; but she still wants to be there for her daughters somehow…

The second short story, “Strawberry Moon,” is about Cody, a death row inmate who has only three hours to live. Cody has been on death row for 14 years; sentenced to 15 years after a burglary went wrong and killed three people, including his older brother. This story is very emotional and moving and in some ways felt very different than the other two stories in this book. Grisham really makes this character seem real and once again puts the reader in a position to feel some empathy for a flawed main character.

The final story, “Sparring Partners,” is about Rusty and Kirk Malloy, brothers and partners at the law firm Malloy & Malloy. The brothers were given control of the company after their father went to jail, but they hate each other and recent failures have only exacerbated tensions. There is a complicated family dynamic as their father is still trying to maintain control of the company from prison while both brothers face their own financial pressures. When an unexpected turn of events leads to a possible prison sentence for everyone, one person stands out as the clear winner in this treacherous legal battle…

The title “Sparring Partners” is more than just the title of the third story…

Novella #1 is called “Homecoming” and this is the story starring Jake and some characters from his earlier stories. It’s a legal story, but not a high-intensity courtroom drama. Jake is called in to help a friend, a disgraced lawyer who has been in hiding for the past 3 years. Jake gets help from Rex and sets off to make decisions in the short but complicated story.

Novella #2 is called “Strawberry Moon” and is the shortest of the three short stories, it is actually more of a short story than a novel. Cody was only 15 when he was sentenced to death for double murder. He has been on death row for 14 years and now has only three hours to live and this is the narration of those three hours. Few characters, 54 pages and full of emotions and points to think about.

Novella #3 is our cover story, Sparring Partners. It takes place in St. Louis and involves a well-established and highly dysfunctional family law firm. Father, one of the founding partners, is in prison for killing his 47-year-old wife, both Silver Spoon sons act in their own interests rather than the interests of the company, and a non-family member serves as managing partner with no title or finances Advantages. .

This is the only real action court story, but it’s minimal. It’s the longest and most complex of the three stories, and also has the most flawed characters and ethical problems to be faced. Finding someone to befriend in this story was confusing, challenging, and surprising, and that’s what led me to my opening speech for this review.

I’m pretty sure I’ve read most if not all of John Grisham’s books. Mostly he writes courtroom dramas that contain a lot of legal theory and very well-developed characters, and very often they are part of a series set in a place that becomes some kind of character. You will meet many locals, different shops and owners, annual events, weekly schedules. I’ve gotten so immersed in some shows that I feel like I moved to those cities for a while.

Detail and development is what sets Grisham apart, and his projects are often quite lengthy. Short fiction is challenging, but especially so for a writer like Grisham, and so the collection became his “sparring partner” in the literary sense. These three stories are well done in terms of characters, dialogue, and emotional scores, but I wanted more from a descriptive perspective. For me, much of my enjoyment in reading his stories comes from the rich, atmospheric, and lavish narratives of the time and place.

Extremely challenging in a positive way are all the questions of right, wrong, maybe or I have no idea. These characters are some of the most flawed Grisham has ever put together in one place. There are also problems that are very close to their homeland. You will have no problem imagining yourself in one or more of these situations and then questioning your decision-making process; Or not…
