Jennifer Weiner born on March 28, year 1970 is an American writer, television producer, and journalist. She lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her debut novel, published in year 2001, was Good in Bed. Her novel In Her Shoes (2002) was made into a film, starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine.

Weiner was born into a Jewish family in DeRidder, Louisiana, where her father was stationed as an Army medic. The following year, her family (including a younger sister and two brothers) moved to Simsbury, Connecticut, where Ella Weiner spent her childhood.

When Weiner was 16 years old, her father left the family. She died of a crack cocaine overdose in 2008.

Her first novel, Good in Bed, is loosely based on her life as a young adult: Like the main character Cannie Shapiro, Weiner’s parents divorced when she was 16 and her mother came out as a lesbian. at 55.

Weiner said she was “one of the nine Jewish kids in her high school class of 400” at the Simsbury High School. She entered the Princeton University at the age of 17 and graduated summa cum laude with an A.B. in the English in year 1991 after completing an 86-page thesis entitled “‘Never Far From Mother –‘ On the Uses of Essentialism in Novels and Films”.

At Princeton, Weiner studied with J.D. McClatchy, Toni Morrison, Ann Lauterbach, John McPhee, and Joyce Carol Oates. Her first published story of hers, Tour of Duty, appeared in Seventeen in year 1992.

After graduating from college, Weiner joined the Center Daily Times, the daily newspaper of State College, Pennsylvania, where he oversaw the education division and a regular column titled “Generation XIII” (referring to the 13th “Generation X”). there she moved to the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky, where she continued to write her Generation XIII column before finding a position as a senior reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, continuing to write for the Inquirer and as a part-time freelancer for Mademoiselle, Seventeen and other publications until the publication of her first novel, Good in Bed, in 2001.

Her second novel, In Her Shoes, was published in year 2005. It was made into a feature film by 20th Century Fox, starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley MacLaine. Jennifer Weiner’s That Summer is a captivating story, easy to read and almost communicative. It has an informal, approachable, and open writing style that makes it feel relatable even when it’s not, and it’s easy to jump right into the plot.

The story follows two women, Daisy and Diana, who share a connection to the past in unexpected ways and their lives converge in the present. The story uses two timelines: Diana’s past and the current perspectives of Diana, Daisy, and Beatrice, Daisy’s daughter.

This story is built around a critical, relevant and important theme. It’s handled in a strong, impactful way that not only stirs your emotions, but stays with you long after you’ve closed the book.

The novel contains delicious and seductive descriptions of food, cultural messages, and powerful representations of women, personal empowerment, and the right to respect. It shows female friendships, marital struggles, as well as notable examples and the contemporary #metoo movement. There is some suspense as well as the drama of the teenagers and the relevant issues they face. Unfortunately, it also contains some of the typical Weiner biases and slights I’ve come to expect from her stories, along with the unfortunate trope of parents not being honest or forthcoming with their children.

The ending is creative and satisfying, capping off an emotional story with a happy ending. Personally, I didn’t find this story confusing at all with its multiple perspectives and thoroughly enjoyed it from the prologue to the last page. For me, Jennifer Weiner’s books are always moving and powerful and a joy to read.

My thoughts:

That Summer takes us back and forth in time as we follow the story of two women named Diana. Something happened to 15-year-old Diana at the Outer Cape, but we didn’t find out the details until much later.

As we alternate between present and past events, we finally begin to understand what happened then…and what motivates Diana today.

As events in the present converge and fill in the gaps of the past, we find ourselves in another #MeToo situation that will suddenly change direction. Will the two Dianas find solutions to past elections and realize what is happening between them now? Meanwhile, “the entire country lies in the rubble of decades of sexual harassment and assault.” Is it a moment of reckoning, a turning point?

As Daisy reflects on her life, her daughter Beatrice reminds her of scenes from A Doll’s House and begins to change the way she sees her world and her husband. She can now focus on that summer and what happened to the other Diana.

I loved this story and couldn’t wait to see what would happen.

Daisy Shoemaker has it all. A thriving cooking business, an independent teenage daughter, a successful lawyer husband, and a beautiful home. Still, she feels dissatisfied. She dropped out of college to marry her husband, Hal, and begins to wonder if she should have graduated and had more independence before getting married. Ella’s daughter Beatrice has begun to rebel and has been expelled from her luxurious boarding school.

Daisy begins receiving emails intended for Diana Starling, who shares a similar email address. She meets Diana and is happy to find a boyfriend. However, Diana has a secret of her own. When she was fifteen years old, she spent her summers babysitting on Cape Cod. She had a wonderful summer and met a special boy. Unfortunately, her summer ends with a brutal rape. Now, as an adult, she has decided to track down her attackers. What does Daisy have to do with this situation and when will she learn the truth?

That Summer is a very timely book that explores the Me Too movement and how sexual assault affects not only those who are assaulted, but also those involved in the assault. That was sad. Definitely not an easy read for the beach, but it was a very good book. I loved the characters and their journeys. My only complaint is that I wanted more character development from Hal. She had turned a new page in his life and wanted to know more about it from his perspective. I do believe that people can change for the better.

Warning: Contains scenes of violent sexual assault and also highly detailed sex scenes. I myself am more of a reader of Romantik behind closed doors.

Overall, That Summer is a compelling drama that shows all sides of the Me Too movement.
