Jennifer Weiner born on March 28, year 1970 is an American writer, television producer, and journalist. She lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her debut novel, published in year 2001, was Good in Bed. Her novel In Her Shoes (2002) was made into a film, starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine.

Written during the COVID pandemic, Jennifer Weiner wanted her new novel The Summer Place to be “a fun, lighthearted book,” a family drama “somewhere between the a Noel Coward farce and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”. It’s so over the top with its twisted relationships and lover pairings! When a character discovers her true sexual orientation through sexy fanfiction, I laugh for minutes. Chapters switched characters, revealing their poor choices, their inability to control their sexual responses to the wrong people.
Not my kind of novel at all, I thought. I had read the last three Weiner novels and each had a problem that was explored through the characters. As I read, I wondered what the “point” of this novel was. There was a lot of sex. A bunch of secrets that kept people from their loved ones. There was one not entirely credible resolution. Why did I read this novel?
Then I read the confirmation statement.
Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set before a wedding. Lovers accidentally realign with very wrong partners. And seeing The Summer Place in that way, as a comedy about human frailty and the power of sexual attraction, how we all make mistakes and we all need to ask for forgiveness and forgiveness, is a game changer.

The house has seen a lot over the past years, read to knows all the history and heartbreak. Grandma expected it to be packed with kids and grandkids, but instead it’s empty except for a few days every year. She intends to sell it. The house is fighting for its heritage and its future.
Weiner’s books have been touted as the perfect “beach read,” and many will find this book just the thing for them. Do not take it too serious. It wasn’t meant to be intellectual. It’s a book for entertainment.

My thoughts:
The Summer Square is at the heart of this compelling family story that pulls the reader in as we meet each character. They all have so many layers and we grew to love them and didn’t want to say goodbye to any of them.
The pandemic is also a big part of this story, which extends beyond its Cape Cod setting and resonates with those of us who are still feeling its effects.
I felt connected to each of the characters, but my favorite was probably Sarah. She felt like someone he could enjoy as a friend or even a daughter.
I loved how the author brought us the whole family with all their quirks and issues and how we were able to support each and every one of them, from Veronica the matriarch to the younger family members like Sam’s stepson Connor. .
When I finally put the book down, I wanted to start all over again! Definitely a five star read.
