The Affair by Danielle Steel is another one of her wonderful family novels. Rose McCarthy runs a successful magazine, is a widow and matriarch of 4 successful adult daughters. She is a workaholic, but she always finds time to keep up with her daughter’s life and happiness. During a meeting at “Mode” magazine, her employees want to make a cover for a new young actress, especially since there is a scandal about the girl’s pregnancy.
To Rose’s dismay, which she doesn’t mention, the man with the pregnant actress turns out to be her son-in-law. Rose has to make a decision to allow this in her magazine, even regarding the possibility of interviews. She calls three of her daughters to find out what they know and what they think before calling her youngest daughter, Nadia, whose husband is publicly cheating on her.
Nadia talks to her mother and explains that she is trying to prevent her two young daughters from finding out about her father. She was taken aback by all the publicity and how obsessed her husband is with this young actress, but he begs her to give him a chance to even help the actress with the baby and leave her as she still loves Nadia. Rose will fly to Paris, where they live, to help Nada make the right decision, while Nadia makes sure that her mother continues with the cover, since everything is up in the air. Naida must take care of her husband, protect her daughters and decide what is best for them.
Nadia’s three sisters decide to fly to Paris and spend a long weekend at her castle to give her advice and support. It was really wonderful to see the sisters together and how close they were. We meet each of them and learn about their own lives and those of their loved ones. Nadia is happy to be with her sisters as they each have their own thoughts about her. The four girls have their own successful businesses in different fields; Nadia, an interior designer living in France, Olivia, a judge living in New York, Veneto, a fashion designer, and Athena, a celebrity chef living in Los Angeles.
What follows focuses primarily on Nadia and whether she can overcome Nicholas’s discretion and decide whether she should divorce him. I loved that the four sisters were so close and always there for each other; even his loved ones were pretty good. Along with Nadia’s struggles, we learn how the other sisters deal with it, as well as her own drama and secrets along the way, not to mention how amazing Rose was to have such a big, tight-knit family.
The affair was a wonderful family story that brought the family together in this crisis. The Affair was written very well by Danielle Steel.
