Something dark lurks in the Louisiana bayou as a methodical killer with a penchant for medical experimentation works hard to complete his most harrowing crime yet and outsmart authorities who are desperate to catch up.

But the coroner, Dr. Wren Muller is the best there is. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of historical crimes and years of experience in forensic medicine, she’s never encountered a case she couldn’t solve. Until now. Case after case piles up on Wren’s exam table, and soon she finds herself caught in a cat-and-mouse hunt with a brutal killer who’s getting bolder by the day.

An addictive read with details straight out of the morgue that only an autopsy technician could deliver, The Butcher and the Wren promises to catch all who enter.

This is the first book by Alaina Urquhart, autopsy technician and host of the Morbid podcast. The book is divided into two parts, with 35 chapters and a total of about 242 pages, not including the acknowledgments.

The story is told from two different points of view as the chapters alternate between the perspective of Jeremy, the killer; and Prospect and Dr. Wren Muller, forensic pathologist. We are immediately introduced to Jeremy’s cold, calculating, and deranged mentality as he terrorizes his victims. This contrasts with Wren’s insightful and meticulous expertise as she collects details that others may miss as if she were on an episode of “CSI”. We go back and forth seeing both sides of this deadly game as both characters are determined to achieve their goals. Halfway through the book we find an intriguing twist…

This was a pretty decent thriller, especially for a first-time writer. Urquhart definitely draws on her experience as an autopsy technician to add some realistic detail and procedural insight to the book, although there seemed to be some minor inconsistencies here and there. The book is quite short and perhaps the story would have been a little more compelling if it had been longer because the characters could have had a little more depth.

The ending certainly wasn’t my favorite either, as it felt very abrupt to me; almost as if more had been written than the author intended to save for the sequel. Still, the story held my interest long enough to read it in one sitting, and I enjoyed most of it (apart from the ending). I hope Urquhart writes a sequel that ties up some loose ends.

The writing style was hypnotic and pulled me into the story. It was annoying at first that the point of view would change with each chapter, but I quickly got used to it and found it effective in increasing the suspense. This seemed like a standard serial killer book until the timeline was revealed and then the book was a blast.
The book has graphic scenes, so be prepared!

Rarely have I become so engrossed in a book that I read it through in one go. But I couldn’t leave it. I was completely immersed in the story from page one. And in typical Alaina fashion, by the end of Chapter 1, she was already taunting other serial killers. Morbid has always been a way out for me, and thanks to Alaina I now have a book that I can dip into again and again to escape whenever listening to tales of brutal murder is deemed inappropriate.

What a great story! I have literally never read an entire book in one go. It arrived at 2:30pm today and I finished it at 8pm. m. I would have preferred a more concise ending, but I hope he saved it for a sequel.
Alaina, those of us who follow the pack are very happy for you (and at the risk of sounding motherly, proud too).
