What would you do if you found out your spouse is cheating on you? The logical answer would be to turn yourself in and then file for divorce, right? Well, that wasn’t the answer from Fern, the heroine of The Doctor’s Wife. Fern embodied the quote “Hell hath no fury like a despised woman”. Her revenge plans against her husband and ultimately her lover can only be described as devilish. While reading, I felt like watching an episode of the documentary Deadly Women.

The characters appearing in Doctor’s Wife are not very likeable. At first I disliked Drew, Fern’s husband and her lover Alice, and liked Fern and Alice’s husband, Rory. After all, Fern and Rory were victims of their spouses’ infidelity. I ended up disliking them all while feeling a little sympathy for Alice. I say this even though Fern was not only devilish but also cunning, making her a force to be reckoned with.

Now after reading the prologue I had a clear idea of what was to come for the characters. So don’t pick up The Doctor’s Wife book expecting a mystery. However, expect a ride so twisted that you’ll be glued to the sides while anticipating the outcome.

Told from the reader’s point of view by Fern and Drew, it sits front row in the minds of both characters. Readers learn what happened in the past and in the present. The secrets of the two came to light. The story ended with an interesting epilogue that makes you wonder if a sequel is in the works or if, like all books in this genre, the reader will have to draw their own conclusions.

THE DOCTOR’S WIFE delivered an addictive, twisted and clever tale of deception and betrayal. A story where not one, but two marriages are destroyed and lives are changed forever. This story proved the reason why you should never underestimate a woman. I enjoyed my first Daniel Hurst novel and look forward to reading more of his work.
