This is the first book I read by this author. It was quick and easy to read. The tension remained stable and increased towards the end. The ending was satisfying.

A heavily tattooed ex-convict, Logan Clarkson, 32, has turned his life around after a 3-year stint in prison thanks to his wife Debbie, a maternity ward nurse, and his parents, Paul and Ruth, who don’t judge and welcome. Debbie’s brother, Mack, gives Logan a job as a delivery boy. He doesn’t trust Logan as easily as his sister and his parents do.

On a hot day in Sydney, Australia, Logan tries to deliver a new PC to Katherine West, but she refuses to answer the door to sign for it. She can’t leave without her signature. He tries to cooperate with her, but she insists on not opening the door. Logan walks away confused, but can’t stop himself. He begins to wonder if something was going on in that house and if Katherine needed help. He shares his concerns with his wife and his boss, but no one seems to think it’s a big deal.

Logan’s younger sister Maddie, 25, was assaulted and is hospitalized in Melbourne. Logan can’t get a flight until tonight, but he plans to beat his loser’s friend Patrick to a pulp! He is the prime suspect in her attack and, according to press reports, has fled to Sydney. Logan receives a text that says “You’re next” and thinks it’s from Patrick.

Logan is still worried about Katherine West, who needs help and decides to go back. Nosy neighbor Gladys, who lives across the street and has been worried about the family all morning, after seeing her tattoos tries to chase him away until he shares her concerns with her. She is an elderly woman who takes care of her husband Lou, who has dementia.

Logan tells him to call the police and breaks down the door and walks through the unlocked laundry room door after hearing a scream and a gunshot. Logan is shocked by what he sees. Katherine and her five-year-old twins, George and Sophie, are held hostage at gunpoint. The police take their time, not showing up or doing anything until more shots are fired.

From the blurb:

Sometimes the most perfect families hide the most terrible secrets. How well do you know the people next door?

Everybody wants to live on Hogarth Street, that pretty tree-lined avenue lined with whitewashed houses. The new Wests family fits the bill. Katherine and John seem so in love and their beautiful 5 year old twins are running screaming around their beautiful emerald green lawn.

But soon people realize: why not join the barbecue in the garden? Why do they turn down babysitting offers? Why do they close the door on you when you knock on the door instead of inviting you in?

Every family has secrets and on the hottest day of the year the truth comes to light. As the tragedy unfolds behind closed doors, the morning choir is interrupted by the wail of sirens. And one by one, the families who worked so hard to welcome the Wests begin to realize: Hogarth Street will never be the same.

The Family Across The Street is a gripping indie thriller from Nicole Trope and one that I found hard to put down once I started.

Set on one of the hottest days of the year in Sydney, Australia, the story begins (literally) with a bang as gunshots ring out from one of the quiet apartment buildings. Something terrible happens behind the door of the West house, where Katherine and John live with their 5-year-old twins.

With multiple narrators, the reader embarks on a fast-paced journey chronicling the events leading up to the shooting. Katherine, the devoted mother of twins who tries to stay alive and protect her children in this situation, Logan, an innocent bystander who tries to stay on the right side of the law but feels compelled to help, and Gladys, the nosy neighbor. who knows what is going on. she’s next door and she’s dying to know what.

I sped through this book, loving every character and every chapter, my heart pounding in my throat as the tragedy slowly unfolded. As a mother, my heart ached for Katherine, who was determined to protect her children at all costs. Meeting Gladys was wonderful after her shifts and everyone should have a nosy neighbor like her. However, my favorite character has to be Logan, the delivery guy who feels withdrawn because he thinks someone is in trouble.

Overall, this is a great story full of believable and intriguing characters, and I’m happy when my amateur sleuthing skills fail because I haven’t really figured out what led to this tragedy or why.
