When Iris and Nola’s mother Georgie died, the sisters made a pact: they would always be there for each other no matter what.

Now, even decades later, they can barely stand to be in the same room. As her health deteriorated, her father devised a plan to get them back together. He stated in his will that before they can claim their inheritance they must live together in the Irish town of Ballycove for six months and try to mend their broken relationships.

But reunited in her childhood home, old resentments fade, new secrets threaten to be uncovered, and each sister must decide which is more important: her pride or her family. Will they be able to overcome their past and find a way to love each other again?

It occurred to Georgie that her father’s death was almost like a final severing of all the ties that still held the sisters together. She experienced the thought of her as if a weight was lifted from her shoulders and she immediately felt guilty. How did she get so bad? Georgie’s eyes went to Iris as she talked about Nola and she could feel her speaking in all caps to each other. Nola hated them both and even if Georgie and Iris managed to rub shoulders until this ordeal was over, Nola was a different matter altogether.

Georgie shifted uncomfortably in her seat. Thinking of Nola, Georgie had to admit that her feelings for her younger sister were complex. There was always a hint of jealousy. Everything seemed so easy for Nola. She gathered friends as effectively as Georgie snubbed the chance to have one. She sighed deeply and slouched further into the passenger seat, pretending to sleep for the rest of the ride home.

ABOUT ‘THE GIN SISTERS PROMISE’: When Georgie, Iris and Nola’s mother died and her father disappeared in her grief, the sisters made a pact: they would always be there for each other no matter what.

Now, decades later, they haven’t spoken to each other in years and can barely stand being in the same room. As her health deteriorates, her father hatches a plan to bring them back together. In his will, he states that before they can claim their inheritance they must live together for six months in their childhood home in the town of Ballycove, Ireland, and try to mend their broken relationships.

As the months pass, old resentments fade, new secrets threaten to surface, and each sister must decide what is more important: her pride or her family. Will they be able to overcome her past and find a way to love each other again?

MY THOUGHTS: What not to love about a book that made me laugh (a lot), cry (a little), and heave a big sigh of regret that my visit to the GIN sisters (Georgie, Iris, Nola) was over. But I had and still have a big smile on my face.

I love a good family heritage story, and The Gin Sisters’ Promise definitely fits that bill too. Add to the mix that it’s largely set in a small Irish town and Faith Hogan’s ability to write realistic characters we can all relate to and I’m in book heaven!

Who has never had a fight with her brothers? There always seems to be at least one of my three siblings who won’t talk to me about some little thing, real or imagined. But these three take sibling alienation to a whole new level. Georgie is a hard-hearted whore; Iris is a doormat; and Nola a traitor. Things have happened that everyone is determined not to forget and definitely not forgive. But when their lives are in shambles and they all live under the same roof, the fun begins. . .

Faith Hogan has written a charming, compelling, and uplifting family drama about the importance of family, forgiveness, and second chances.
