This author never ever ceases to amaze me with her good storytelling. Needless to say, Boyfriend Material is yet another favorite! It’s a heartfelt second chance story full of angst and emotion… And yes, there are plenty of hot and sexy moments too! I absolutely cannot put this book down!

Eric Hansen and Julia Lauren met in high school. He was the “golden” boy on campus… gorgeous, hockey star, and let’s not forget he was rich! All the girls wanted to be the Eric’s favorite girl. And Lauren was his girlfriend for a while until she broke his heart!

Three years later, both Eric and Julia attend Hawthorne University. Once again he’s the big guy on campus, captain of the hockey team and living his dream. NO!! Yes, he’s still rich, he still has a lot of girls who want to be his, he still plays hockey, but his life is far from great. He lives in the shadow of his late brother Kurt. With his father urging him to follow in his brothers’ professional footsteps. My heart broke for Eric dealing with his father. Especially if Eric just wanted to play hockey!

Julia is also in the HU. Although he started with a scholarship, he lost it due to many things beyond his control. With a mother addicted to drugs who has a multitude of problems, she has decided to try to help her mother. All this and continuing her education after losing her scholarship.

Now she lives in a seedy part of town, works as a stripper at a local bar, and tries to make ends meet and pay for college. I couldn’t help but love the character of Julia who, despite her circumstances, was not only proud but also brave and resilient, doing whatever it took to survive.

When Eric comes to Julia’s rescue, the two will reluctantly reconnect. After Eric shows up just in time to save her from being stalked by a really bad guy from the club one night. You can find out more about him in the book and he was really bad to the bone! Of course, Julia was grateful, but when he seemed to keep showing up to help her.

But Julia, the proud person she is, stands firm and tells Eric she doesn’t need him to appear as her “knight in shining armor”. Now they agree to start out as friends… and see what happens. Eric and Julia’s friendship turns into confidants, which leads to some really hot times. But where do you go from here?

“I don’t have to deal with you. I can just be me Because you like me the way I am.”

I warn you that there are also some really difficult topics in this book.
Bravo for Ilsa, who dealt with these issues sensitively and closely.

Julia and Eric attended Hawthorne Prep together. She was the scholarship recipient and he was one of the most popular students on campus. Eric has a history of loving her and leaving her… even in high school. Julia can’t help but feel attracted to him. Until he lives up to his reputation and tears her heart apart.

Years later, both Julia and Eric attend Hawthorne University. Julia works as a striptease to pay her sick mother’s bills. He lost his scholarship and now has to pay for everything the hard way. Her mother owes some money that has not become her fault. Eric witnesses an incident one night and comes to Julia’s defense. After everything he did to her in high school, she doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore.

I didn’t really find Eric endearing. He really had no excuses for the way he treated Julia in high school. Reading the book I felt that Eric was a great catalyst in Julia’s life. It really hurt her and I felt like she didn’t do a good job of redeeming herself.

I loved that Julia wasn’t sitting around waiting for Eric. That she lived her life and really moved on. She did not long for something new and fresh. I liked that he didn’t mind her undressing if that meant she had to support her mother. The story wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns. There were a number of adult themes in the book and it was refreshing to read.
