Amor Towles born in year 1964 is an American writer. He is best known for his best-selling novels Rules of Civility (2011), A Gentleman in Moscow (2016), and The Lincoln Highway (2021).

Towles was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Yale College and received an M.A. in English from the Stanford University, where he was a Scowcroft Fellow. When Towles was 10 years old, he threw a bottle with a message into the Atlantic. A few weeks later he received a letter from Harrison Salisbury, then editor-in-chief of the New York Times. Towles and Salisbury corresponded for many years afterwards.

After graduating from Yale University, Towles was scheduled to teach in China on a two-year fellowship from the Yale China Association. However, this was abruptly canceled due to the Tiananmen Square raid in 1989.

From 1991 to 2012 he worked as an investment banker and director of research at Select Equity Group in New York.

As a young man, Towles credited Peter Matthiessen, a renowned nature writer, novelist, and one of the founders of The Paris Review, as his main inspiration for writing fiction. His second novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, was finalist for 2016 Kirkus Prize for Fiction. It was also nominated for the 2018 Dublin International Literary Prize. Towle’s third novel, The Lincoln Highway, was published on October 5 of 2021.

In June 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson was taken home to Nebraska by the supervisor of the youth labor farm where he had just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother died a long time ago, his father recently passed away, and the bank foreclosed on the family farm.

Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and go to California, where they can start a new life. But as the Guardian drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the working farm have been hiding in the trunk of the Guardian’s car. Together they hatch a very different plan for Emmett’s future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction: to New York.

Delivered in just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’ third novel will satisfy fans of his complex literary style while introducing them to a range of new and richly fictional settings, characters and themes.

Emmett Watson, 18, is the protagonist of the LINCOLN HIGHWAY, the first transcontinental highway. He returns from reform school to take care of the foreclosure of his father’s farm. He has a plan to bring his 8 year old brother Billy to California and use the money his father left him to buy a run down house that he can remodel and sell to buy two more and so on.

He chooses California because there are 16 million people there who need housing. Billy wants to be in San Francisco on July 4th to meet his mother who sent them postcards after she left his father. The last one he sent was from San Francisco, and he hopes to meet her at the Fourth of July celebration he loved.

Before Emmett can go on his quest (this is definitely an adventure novel, and Emmett is the hero), two of his friends from reform school show up. They hitchhiked in the trunk of the keeper’s car that was taking Emmett to the farm. Duchess and Woolly steal Emmett’s Studebaker before he can begin his journey.

The novel is divided into sections where we get the points of view of different characters. We learn from the Duchess and Woolly that they are “borrowing” Emmett’s car to get Woolly’s $150,000 inheritance back. Emmett and Billy get on a train to follow them and get Emmett’s car. Emmett thinks that he exactly knows where to find Duchess.

Billy carries a big red book with him wherever he goes. He has read it 35 times at any one time. Professor Abacus Abernathe’s Compendium of Heroes, Adventurers, and Other Intrepid Travelers is really the heart of the novel. Emmett and Billy are on the train when Emmett goes to get some food. Billy is being pursued by a homeless man named Preacher John who is trying to steal his silver dollar collection. A black man named Ulises saves him.

Billy explains where Ulysses got his name from. He shows her the section about Odysseus in his book and how he spent ten years trying to return home after the siege of Troy. Ulysses spent most of this time traveling the rails to find his family he lost in World War II. Ulysses is fascinated by the book. At one point, he says the professor and Billy gave him the hope he’d lost over time.

Duchess is also obsessed with getting revenge on her father, who was the reason he was sent to the juvenile detention center. He doesn’t seem to realize that he has more in common with his father than he thought. Duchess will do anything to get this $150,000 inheritance. Dear reader, you will spend most of the book in and around New York City and upstate.

It’s only towards the end that Emmett and Billy will finally leave for California, but not before Sally shows up. Sally is the girl next door in Nebraska. She cooks and cleans and takes care of everyone with a small thank you. She’s expecting a call from Emmett in New York. If he doesn’t, he gets in his truck and drives 20 hours to New York, where the truck dies, but not before finding her at Woolly’s sister’s. He wants to go to California with them and won’t settle for anything less.

There is a scene where Billy discovers a combination with Woolly’s great-grandfather’s safe that you won’t believe, but you must remember that Billy is a mystical child saved by the reincarnation of Ulysses. There are beautiful passages in this book. Woolly is another lovable character. It literally wouldn’t hurt a fly, and its fate will make you sad. I also cheered for Sally. Emmett doesn’t seem to realize that their relationship is in the stars.
