Harvest of Rubies is about a young writer, a woman named Sarah, who longs for acceptance, belonging. Her mother died at the age of seven, her father, Simeon, does not know what to do with her and therefore neglects her most basic need: her affection. But Sarah knows how to get her father’s attention, she learns to read and write and gets Simeon’s attention, and he starts teaching her. Nehemiah, the king’s cupbearer, notices her rare talent for writing and speaking different languages and recommends her to Queen Damaspia.
Sarah soon becomes chief scribe and uncovers a conspiracy to tarnish the queen’s good name. This further earns her the queen’s favour, so much so that the queen wants to reward her favorite scribe of hers. But the queen’s choice of reward is not what Sarah wants, who finds her worth in her work. The Queen arranges Sarah’s marriage to Lord Darius. But it turns into a disaster when Sarah goes to great lengths to prevent the wedding.
When the queen offers her own servants to prepare for the wedding, Sarah turns them down every day until she realizes on the last day that she has no idea how to prepare, though she tries. Arriving at her wedding, she surprises not only her future husband, but all the royals present. From there, the story goes round and round as everyone believes she did it on purpose to tarnish the good name of Lord Darius and the royalty.
As the royal court travels, Sarah is left alone in Lord Darius’s palace, alone with her servant. But she soon discovers that there are loyal friends in this house, and together they uncover a devious butler and an evil man named Teispes who steals her master from her. The danger becomes very real and Sarah discovers that she must find evidence to present her husband to Lord Darius. Teispes discovers that Sarah has revealed her secret and tries everything to foil her plans.
When the queen sends Darius to find her wife and bring her to justice, they discover that Teispes even tried to kill her. The story keeps getting better, it’s full of humor in the right places that made me laugh at Sarah’s antics… it’s also full of angst, as Sarah soon falls in love with Darius, but has no hope that he will reciprocate. love. Enduring hope is also woven throughout the story, and when you get to the part where you realize why the book is called Harves of Rubies, the effect is a wonderfully satisfying sigh of relief. I really can’t wait for Tessa’s next book and would recommend both this one and Pearl in the Sand.
