For fans of the “old” Anita Blake, who solved more crimes than sex, this is a great transitional book for Ms. Hamilton to move away from the relationship-based writing and vampire politics that has dominated most of his recent novels. . Also, the writing style was excellent. Tight in a way I didn’t even know I was missing. Every chapter ends with a bang (no pun intended), something quotable, something memorable.
I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed the level of writing in this book. Maybe if I mention that I found a typo towards the end and it took me out of the story in a very disturbing way maybe that illustrates how deeply I fell into the story because typos always take me out of a story but that was the only thing what i noticed
However, I found some problematic content. Not in the way that prudes would, not in the violence and murder part that most people might object to, but in a way that conveys the “just the few bad apples” myth in the ” rest of police. are good” illustrated “Fass.
I don’t think it’s at all a surprise that Laurell K. Hamilton “goes for the blues” to the extent that she does, whether on purpose or not, you can tell she genuinely believes that we’re safer with the police than without them . I give him credit for also showing that the justice system as a whole is flawed and in need of change, also that it seems like any change will only create a new problem rather than solve everything.
No, the problem I had was that it uses unnecessary justification of good bulls to cover up dangerous mistakes worse. There’s probably a SPOILER in my plot, so here’s yours:

When Anita rolls the dancer in the strip club, she doesn’t do it on purpose, but without a literal (literally) deus ex machina stepping in to save her (and the innocent dancer) with a literal miracle from God, then she could have done it she shot that woman to the same extent she shot Nicky and others. She would have taken the rest of his free will and life from her. I don’t think he would have just left her, but he would have irrevocably changed her life and turned her into a slave.
And Newman never questioned whether or not he should cover it up, because that’s what cops do for each other.
He did help a bit that the local captain held his only deputy responsible for attempted murder, or at least left him in jail as a lesson, but we all know he never really intended to charge him because he hadn’t charged him at any point. . Again the good cops cover up for the bad cops and they handle that stuff internally and we should all accept that the way they decide it should be dealt with is fine if sometimes innocent lives are lost and most of them don’t even end up losing their jobs.
The only reason I didn’t deduct a star for this is because I noticed this happened in most of his books in one form or another, but it had never bothered me before. Accepting a star from a good, hard-working writer for something I now realize myself seems too hypocritical.
