When her engaged daughter, Harlow, insists that their wedding be held in their backyard, she becomes aggressive when she learns her mother is looking to sell. Robyn tries to explain that her ex-husband Cord wants half of the sale and her time is up; can no longer afford to live there; but Harlow is beyond reason, she only takes care of herself. Austin, his son, just graduated from high school and works for his father. He is very close to Robyn, but she worries as she feels she should go to college and not rely on her father’s fishing charter business.

Her ex-husband is dating Harlow’s fiancé’s sister (20 years younger) and her best friend is cheating on her husband despite her warnings. Robyn is stressed to the max as her family always comes first, but now she gets a call from her great aunt Lillian who is scheduled to visit her in Santa Barbara, California this summer. It took her a day to decide that getting away and spending time with her beloved aunt was what she needed.

Aunt Lillian is 94 years old and lives in a huge mansion that has secret rooms and priceless antiques and is considered a historic mansion; She also has 15 cats. Lillian was delighted to see Robyn and introduced her to Mason Bishop, a distant relative of her late husband. Mason is a former Army veteran and also writes on the sidelines. Robyn was a little apprehensive about Mason at first, but in a very short time they became friends; since Lillian had already told them that Mason will inherit the mansion and Robyn will bring all the contents (antiques, books, papers) inside.

Lillian keeps urging Robyn to move to California and open her own antique shop as she will be able to sell all the valuable items in the house. Mason and Robyn begin to spend time together and the attraction between them grows as they both realize that they are perfect for each other. Will Robyn allow herself to fall in the love again?

What follows is a wonderful family story; especially when everyone who calls Florida home is slowly turning up at Lillian’s to be with Robyn. She is surprised when Austin shows up with Harlow, who apologizes for being mean and angry with her mother. But it doesn’t end there, as before long her ex-husband, ex-boyfriend, best friend, Harlow’s fiancee and sister appear; Luckily the house was big enough to accommodate almost everyone.

The Summer Getaway was a wonderful story that pushed all the family buttons, with emotion, drama, anger, divorce, hope, struggles and even sex. Robyn was the center of this story and I loved that. I really believed that she would break up with Mason. Another fantastic book very well written by Susan Mallery which kept me from putting the book down. I will suggest you to read The Summer Getaway.

One of my favorite authors, Susan Mallery, is doing it again. THE SUMMER GETAWAY is a five-star read set in Naples, Florida. It’s a heartwarming story with many threads beautifully woven together to bring us to a conclusion with multiple happy endings. This is the story of Robyn, and despite being a single mom, she and her ex-husband, Cord, work together to do what is right for their children. But he’s never there for her and she’s tired of taking over.

His children, Austin and Harlow, work for their father in what was once the family business, but is now wholly owned by him. Austin tries to figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life while Harlow is engaged and plans to one day take over the business. Her engagement and wedding planning isn’t working out the way she’d hoped, and she and her fiancé, Kip, need to learn not just to communicate better, but to communicate.

Robyn decides to take some time to figure out the rest of her life after wasting four years since getting divorced. Her dwindling funds are a dark cloud over her, so she heads to her Aunt Lillian’s quirky Santa Barbara home. She finds peace there and an attraction to Mason, who remains there as well. Her aunt is ninety years old and Mason will inherit the house and she will inherit the furniture and cats when Lillian dies, which both Robin and Mason hope will be long into the future. If everyone, and I mean everyone, follows Robyn to California, things will get hectic and a little out of hand.

This was often an emotional read with some tears and moments of laughter. There are many mysteries, love and love, infidelity, the house and all its antiques, unexpected twists, the sea, many cats, soul-searching moments and some romance. The characters have depth and most of them were likable and attracted me except for Jace, Robyn’s ex-boyfriend, and Cord, her ex-husband. Both left me with an ick factor.

Do you know how to select them or what? There are many details as the story unfolds along with beautiful and vivid descriptions of the place, the houses, the shops and even the cocktails. There is an ending with the epilogue and happy ending, but I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to read what Mrs. Mallery writes next.

Susan Mallery’s The Summer Getaway was an addicting read for me. When I started I didn’t want to do anything else and stayed up until 3am to finish. it was a really funny, moving, and touching story about starting over, being open to new experiences, and striving for a life you might not have imagined.

Each family has its own dynamic, including fictional families. In this novel, Robyn is divorced from Cord, a perennial cheater. They married and had a baby when they were too young. At the beginning of the story, her marriage ended four years ago and Robyn is dating Jace, a man her son doesn’t think is right. Austin is 18, just out of high school, which means his mom can now sell her big house and try to get her finances in order as she won’t be able to get support for much longer.

Their daughter Harlow, 22, is engaged to Kip, although Robyn believes her daughter is in a rush to get married and needs to mature before making such a commitment. Harlow has a fit of hysteria over the sale of the house as she has always dreamed of getting married in her backyard. Harlow works with her father and believes he will fund a new business that she can run herself, a dream she has had for years. Cord isn’t a very thoughtful father, he’s not sympathetic, and now he’s dating an inappropriate young woman (inappropriate for a number of reasons, the least of which is that she’s just few years older than Harlow).

When Robyn’s great-aunt Lillian invites her to leave her home in Naples, Florida and go to Santa Barbara, California for a visit, Robyn decides to accept the invitation. Robyn spent much of her life with Lillian and Lillian’s late husband Leo, and she loved their vast, twisted and unusual home. When he arrives, he finds a stranger there with his aunt and learns that this man, Mason, will one day inherit the house if 94-year-old Lillian dies. Robyn will inherit everything in the house, including 15 cats.

His dream is to have his own antique shop and the furniture and homewares in this house are the best start for that business. Mason comes across as friendly, caring, and definitely attractive. They develop a relationship unrelated to what Robyn had with Cord or Jace. He also has baggage and finds it hard to believe someone like Robyn would want to be with him for the long haul.

They both love Lillian and begin building a cute household routine together that will one day have to be sold to the historical society. Suddenly, however, other people in Robyn’s life come into the house one at a time and change the dynamic. The kids are besotted with Mason. Harlow is estranged from her mother but needs her when her own life is turned upside down.

It’s really fun to read when all sorts of people who need each other show up. I decided to have a happy ending for everyone (except Cord). There was nothing much lovable about his character.
There is something endearing about Susan Mallery’s writing style. She has a good understanding of what makes people tick, what makes an honest and healthy relationship and the mistakes many of us make. The book is filled with romance, emotional angst, and a satisfying ending.
