It’s 1926 and Shanghai is abuzz with debauchery.

A blood feud between two gangs turns the streets red and leaves the city defenseless in the grip of chaos. It all centers on eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to take her role as the proud heir to the Scarlet Gang, a network of criminals high above the law. Her only rivals for her power are the White Flowers, who have fought against the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is her legacy, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and her first betrayal.

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability, culminating in scratching their throats, people start whispering. Of a contagion, of madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths mount, Juliette and Roma must put down their weapons – and their grudges – and work together, because if they can’t stop this chaos, there won’t be any city left for them both to rule.

A blood feud erupts between two rival gangs in 1926 Shanghai. Juliette Cai has returned to take over the Scarlet Gang and her biggest rival is Roma Montagov, leader of the White Flowers. Gangsters on both sides are soon tearing their throats out and rumors of contagion or madness are spreading. Juliette and Roma must join forces, otherwise there will be nothing left to rule.

We are introduced to gangs right away, just like our Romeo and Juliet. Some lines are borrowed from the bard, but this isn’t a reimagining of West Side Story set in a different location. We have the 1920s Shanghai culture, the various underworld characters, and the supernatural in the prologue.

The novel is addictive from there, with so much detail about the city, its politics, and the gangs that I feel like I’m there. Juliette seeks to get to the bottom of the madness as she simultaneously battles misogyny and the subtleties of family relationships and piety inherent in her Chinese culture.

The Roma are of Russian origin, but the White Flowers develop more through merit than lineage. Either way, the tension between them and their families is palpable. This takes her mind off the monster in the river and the bugs; When I read it, I also want to scratch my head, she describes herself so vividly.

There is a lot of action in the second half of the book, with shifting allegiances and the weight of the past between Juliette and Roma as they try to uncover the truth about the monster and save Shanghai. It doesn’t help that they can’t openly cooperate and there are those willing to take them down in the name of advancing within their gang.

I flipped the page so fast and groaned in frustration when it got to the bottom. Then there was another unexpected twist that made perfect sense and another groan with the last few lines. There will be another book after this one which is wonderful, but it was the end of this one and I wanted more books to read!

Romeo and Juliet fighting a monster in 1920s Shanghai works great, even if it feels like it shouldn’t.

In this beautiful and ambitious reimagining of Romeo and Juliet, the talented wordsmith Chloe Gong takes the reader on a sublime and moving journey where something sinister lurks just below the surface of the glitz, glamor and intrigue of the 1920s. in Shanghai. Set in this dazzling ‘Paris of the East’, the story begins with our protagonists, Juliette Cai, the daughter of the Chinese mob king, and Roma Montagov, the son of Russian émigrés who fled during the Bolshevik Revolution and remain at the epicenter of a feud.

ongoing blood feud between respective families their, the Scarlet Gang and the White Flowers. While the Cais have ruled Shanghai with an iron fist for generations, the Montagov’s gradual but steady rise to power threatens to usurp the Cai’s absolute control over the city. As this feud piles up more bodies in the streets every day, the underworld faces its own threat from other emerging power players like the Foreign Concessions, the Communists, and the Kuomintang, with all these separate factions fighting for control of Shanghai. .

From the very first page, I was immediately drawn in by Gong’s luscious and spectacular prose, its unforgettable cast of characters, stunning plot twists, and a fully immersive and beautifully rendered world of 1920s Shanghai brought to life in a unique way. intricately beautiful.

The white-hot, slow-burn romance between Juliette and Roma as they grapple with past mistakes, missed opportunities, and burning hopes that could very well lead to a secure future or total ruin is sure to delight readers, because you can’t cheer them up otherwise. . as these rival heirs attempt to defy their ill-fated fate. However, Juliette and Roma are also supported by an equally stellar supporting cast of characters including: the intense yet sensitive Benedikt Montagov, the hilariously diabolical and carefree #sinammon roll Marshall Seo, and the maliciously loyal Kathleen Lang.

For my part, I definitely look forward to the next part of THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS, as Gong is simply an exceptional young talent to be reckoned with.

Sometimes it can be difficult to infuse historical fiction with a hint of fantasy. However, Chloe Gong does an excellent job of plunging the reader into 1920s Shanghai in These Violent Delights.

world building
Worldbuilding is crucial when making a novel that falls into the genre of historical fiction, because as readers we are already reasonably familiar with the periods. So the structure has to be solid; it has to be believable and connect the reader with the story. When someone thinks of the 1920s, they thinksa on gangsters, outlaws, speakeasies, and flapper dresses, and Gong gives readers that.

Gong builds this retelling of Romeo and Juliet with incredible detail and a believable plot of gangsters at war. There have probably been many Romeo and Juliet romances in real life. The point is that it is believable. The reader does not have to give up faith in him as he reads the story, as it is grounded and plays with the romanticization of the time to keep the reader interested.

There is such great detail that went into the creation of this world and it has this sharp edge to emphasize the danger around every corner. After all, this is a story about mobsters and monsters. However, this detail, the color that Gong paints in the narration of it, makes for a beautiful painting, with shadows in all the delicate and delicate places to add to the romance and mystery of the 1920s.

Characterization and Diversity
What also makes this a good recount is how different it is. Gong took liberties with the romance of Romeo and Juliet by turning lovers into enemies. Juliette Cai and Roma Montagov differ from their parenting story in the best way.

It’s always great to see the story told in a clever and unique way, and that’s exactly what Chloe Gong did with her story. Gong offers readers something new and unique. Juliette is rougher around the edges, more brutal, but she was always a little smarter than Romeo and it’s great to see her intelligence taken to new heights here.

Juliette isn’t the only character to shine here. Gong breathes new life into this group of characters. Everyone from the original track is here, but there is variety and tension in their voices and characters. Gong gives strong representation to the LGBTQ community. It’s subtle in the context of the story, again, this helps emphasize the realism, but it’s obvious to the reader that it’s cool.

final thoughts
There is a lot about this fantastic novel. From the brilliant characterization to the vivid world-building, These Violent Delights is a unique and outstanding Romeo and Juliet narrative with a wonderful fantasy twist that heightens the suspense throughout the novel and gives the story an exceptional edge.
