What do you really do when a sociopath loves you? Aspiring FBI profiler Laurel Snow is about to find out…

To call Laurel Snow’s relationship with her newfound half-sister defiant is an understatement. Not only does Laurel suspect Abigail is behind her father’s mysterious disappearance, her erratic behavior makes life in Laurel’s small hometown interesting, to say the least. When Abigail claims someone is now trying to kill her, Laurel’s instinct to protect her sister kicks into high gear. Then things get even more dangerous when bodies start appearing in the icy waters of the Sauk River and there is only one connection between them: Abigail. . .

Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers bringing in these bodies with his scuba gear only complicates matters. Huck is just as impulsive and fiery as Laurel is coldly analytical, making their alliance risky at best. But dealing with such a demonically brilliant killer will require all the help Laurel can get. Because Laurel’s attempt to save her troubled sister’s life could cost her her own. . .

You Can Hide was a ride! A unique main character, his motley crew, a serial killer and lots of twists make a good thriller. Add to that some sexy time and I’m sold.

If the previous book introduced Laurel and her quirks, this one shows us how her current situation (work, friends, and family) is slowly changing her. Or more specifically, how you choose to change to better adapt to your new environment.

Of course, there’s the romance between Laurel and Huck. There is some progress here and I couldn’t be happier. The “injured and hospitalized” argument is a cliche and used twice! but it works. Though he’s slow as a snail, they clearly develop deep feelings for each other, which is compounded by the fact that they work together and have more than flirty interactions. I wonder where they lead in the next book.

In fact, Laurel isn’t the only character to change the way she is. Two important people in Laurel’s life are doing the same. Huck’s changes are subtle as he’s definitely not ready to become anything less than a grumpy Highlander. Laurel’s half-sister Abigail has a new goal, and while her personality remains the same, her actions paint her in a new light.

We see more of the city’s main characters as we investigate. I loved that aspect because it’s a perfect counterpoint to the serial killer plot. In small town stories, everyone knows everyone, secrets cannot be kept, and nothing can be done without it becoming gossip. But here’s a serial killer roaming the streets, his victims leading double lives, hiding suspicious things from Laurel… You never know what’s in store for you.

As in the first book, the murders are quite graphic and gruesome. Definitely not for the faint hearted. However, it is not in vain, since the investigators care about the staging and the condition of the victims.

If you love thrillers with a romantic side, this is the book for you.

Laurel Snow is a brilliant profiler for the FBI, very good at tracking down serial killers, but she’s very literal, somewhat innocent in many ways, and has some trouble interacting with others. He’s back to visit family in Washington state, but looks like he’ll be staying for a while, long enough to set up a field office. It seems that several serial killers are drawn to this area.

I really liked the main characters in You Can Hide story. There’s Huck, the Department of Fish and Wildlife tracker, with his giant bear dog. Huck and Laurel dance around their mutual attraction and don’t trust each other. And then there’s Abigail, a half-sister Laurel didn’t know. Abigail appears to be a sociopath, is just as smart as Laurel, and wants to spend time with Laurel as a sister. Laurel doesn’t trust Abigail, but Abigail keeps pushing for a relationship.

As I tracked down the killer and found his victims, I wondered who the killer was and why he killed these women. There are many twists, possible suspects, and side stories from other people who live in the area.
