Cousins Mari, Erica, Selena and Gracie are inseparable. They are not just family, they are best friends: they share secrets, traditions and a passionate love for their Abuelita. But her idyllic childhood ends when Mari’s parents divorce her and force her to move. After Mari leaves, the girls’ close bond dissolves.

Fifteen years later, Mari has a big house and a handsome husband, but her life is in shambles. Erica’s boyfriend just dumped her and her new boss hates her.

Selena can’t seem to find her place in the world: not Mexican enough for her family, not white enough for her peers. And Gracie is a Catholic school teacher with an all-consuming crush, but she can’t trust herself when it comes to the romance.

As difficult as the cousins’ lives are, nothing can prepare them for the heartbreaking loss of a loved one. When tragedy brings them together, will they remember their grandmother’s lessons on family and forgiveness, or are fifteen years apart too much to overcome?

BIG CHICAS DON’T CRY by Annette Chavez Macias (women’s literature) 4 stars
This is the author’s first novel. Since this book currently doesn’t have an inside look feature, I took one for the team and chose it. The chapters alternate between these four titles: Gracie, Erica, Selena, Mari. The epilogue is titled Gracie. The writing style is what I call “beach reading”; There are no English words in this book that challenge you.

That said, the writing clearly assumes at least some knowledge of Spanish, and I didn’t recognize the words I found. That is always annoying. You shouldn’t have to look up a foreign language dictionary to understand what’s going on in a novel. The story revolves around four cousins. The language will offend some readers.

what a joy Best read of the year so far. I loved the characters, the culture that reminded me of our pride, fears, anger and meanness of this world we live in. However, the wonder of it all was the triumph of family love, which will see us through the good times and the bad. Thank you, Mrs. Macias.

Growing up on the Texas-Mexico border, I laughed as I read the perfect mix of languages that was so familiar to me. It is not much and only translates when necessary. What fun…I loved these cousins!
Maybe there will be a sequel?
