Emily Kate Johnston, who plays E.K. Johnston is a Canadian forensic archaeologist and writer.
Johnston began writing fan fiction in 2002 and wrote her first manuscript in 2009. Her first book, The Story of Owen: Dragon Slayer of Trondheim, was published in 2014 and is set in an alternate contemporary Ontario where dragons are real and a threat. The New York Times review called the book “a smart first step in the career of a novelist who… has plenty more songs to sing about,” and it was nominated for a 2015 William C. Morris Award. A sequel, Prairie Fire followed in the year 2015.
Johnston’s third book was A Thousand Nights, a retelling of The Thousand and One Nights. CS Lewis’s descriptions of the desert in The Horse and His Boy inspired Johnston to write her own novel set in the desert. A companion book, Spindle, followed in the year 2016, which was the reinterpretation of the Sleeping Beauty.
Her fifth novel Exit, Pursued By A Bear was published in the year 2016. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale, it tells the story of cheerleader Hermione Winters who discovers that she is pregnant after being sexually abused at a party in a camp. It was written partly as a challenge, partly as a response to Stephen Woodworth’s 2013 bill to re-criminalize abortion. It was named “Book of the Year” by several organizations, including NPR, Publishers Weekly, and the New York Public Library. It won Amy Mathers Teen Book Award from Canadian Children’s Book Center in the year 2017.
As a Star Wars fan, Johnston was asked to write a book about the character Ahsoka Tano. Released in October 2016, Ahsoka fills the gap between his appearances in The Clone Wars and Rebels. Her second Star Wars novel, Queen’s Shadow, was published in March 2019. Queen’s Shadow, starring Padme Amidala, is set in the years between the events of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. In addition, he also wrote the story By Anyway Sun, which centers on Miara Larte, a character created by Johnston in Ahsoka and set during the events of A New Hope.
Johnston describes his novel That Inevitable Victorian Thing as an “idealistic Canadian sci-fi romance of the near future”. It was released in 2017.
She credits her academic writing discipline for helping her with time management when she writes prose; and she claims that she is a fast writer: she wrote A Thousand Nights in “just about 20 days” and writes with very little disturbance. She advises beginning and young writers to learn to complete projects as an exercise in self-discipline and editing.
Her favorite authors are Jo Graham, Elizabeth Wein, Tessa Gratton, Kiersten White, Madeleine L’Engle, JRR Tolkien, David Eddings, CS Lewis, and Holly Black. She likes to plays the alto saxophone and the clarinet.
Johnston released another Star Wars novel, Queen’s Peril, on June 2, year 2020.

E.K. Johnston’s EXIT PURSUED BY A BEAR is a powerful, emotional, tough but positive story that is exceptionally well written. It’s not easy to read a rape story. It’s challenging, difficult, infuriating, heartbreaking. But the author presents it in such a way that you can see beyond this act of violence and meet her character, connect with her, see her as she is and was, and not just as a victim. It’s a moving and compelling story that, as it helps you get through the bells, gives you hope.
Hermione is strong but not unrealistic. She has a great support structure in her parents, her friends, her trainer, the cop assigned to her case, her therapist, but none that feel too lucky. She refuses to be called a victim, act like one, or be treated like one. But she is not afraid to rely on her support to get by in everyday life.
EXIT PURSUED BY A BEAR book lets you get to know about the Hermione both before her attack and after, flaws and all. You can feel to be a part of her recovery process. It focuses on the positive – healing, strength, resilience, goals, options, power – but keeps things believable. It tells Hermione’s story in a way that is as helpful and informative as it is engaging. And while he doesn’t shy away from the subject, he doesn’t feel exploitative.
While the subject matter may be too mature, personal, or touchy for some readers, it shouldn’t deter others from choosing this incredibly amazing book. EXIT, Pursued by a Bear is not too dark, too depressing, too difficult. The author found the right balance between seriousness and entertainment. It’s uplifting. It’s heartbreaking. It is hopeful. It is beautifully written. Hermione Winters is inspiring.
And it’s one of those extraordinary stories that could help a reader find a way through the darkness or find a way to help someone they know. I can’t recommend this highly enough.
