I love my annual adventure with Savich and Sherlock! Catherine Coulter’s writing keeps bringing me back!

What I liked: In the FBI series, Mrs. Coulter has a successful format, but this year she changed it up a bit and made it even better. What changed her? you ask, well that would take the surprise out of reading. I’ve really enjoyed the change and am now looking forward to the next in the series to see how it all plays out.

Insidious is two murder/assassination attempt stories in one. Savich and Sherlock are investigating the attempted murder of their good friend Venus Rasmussen and the killer must be someone they know. Meanwhile, Special Agent Cam Wittier is sent to Hollywood to investigate the deaths of aspiring actresses. The murders are particularly brutal.

One would think that after reading 20 books in this series, the reader might get a little bored with the established format used by Mrs. Coulter; however, his writing exceeds all of the reader’s expectations. He has an extraordinary way of drawing the reader into the story. Her descriptions paint the most wonderful pictures in my head, her characters are still growing and the humor is just the icing on the cake. The interactions between the characters and the way their conversations are written simply draw you in.

Usually in suspense novels I can find out certain things about the crime and the criminal. In Insidious, Mrs. Coulter was so good at distracting the criminals’ minds that I missed a few key clues and was very surprised by the result. I kept turning the pages hoping my suspicion would prove true, but the curveball was so well camouflaged that I spun and missed. That was a nice surprise.

What I didn’t like: The story “feels” a bit slow at first as Mrs. Coulter builds the various plots and storylines, but it soon picks up and grabs your attention.
