Welcome to the centenary.

Every 100 years, Lightlark Island seems to host the Centenary, a deadly game to which only the rulers of six kingdoms are invited. The invitation is an invitation, a call to embrace the victory and the doom, jewelry and blood.

The centenary offers the six rulers last chance to break the curses that have plagued their kingdoms for centuries. Every ruler has something to hide. Each realm’s curse is uniquely evil. To destroy curses, a ruler must have to die.

Isla Crown is the young ruler of the wildlings, a kingdom of temptresses cursed to kill anyone they fall in love with. Feared and despised, they count on Isla to end their suffering by triumphing at the Centenario.

To survive, Isla must have to lie, cheat, and betray…even when love complicates everything.

I have to say that overall I really enjoyed Lightlark, but I can’t say I didn’t have any issues with it. I have to admit that one story billed as some kind of dark fantasy tributes to Hunger games caught my eye immediately. Although I can definitely see some similarities, after all both show fragmented societies and competition, overall the similarities end there.

Where the Hunger Games competition only required one survivor, the Lightlark competition only requires one casualty. The rulers of six cursed clans must clash, and one of them must die to break the curses. The setup was great and I liked the different clans and their unique abilities, but I couldn’t help but notice some pretty weird gaps in the logic. Is there only 100 days that a contest can take place when a ruler has to die breaking curses and yet they can’t even try to kill each other until the 50 days are up?

And even then, they’re forced to team up with another of the clans, who else can’t they kill? The curse has been in place for 500 years, so why make rules that actually make them harder to break? Rather than being a competition, Lightlark’s story plays out more like an Uncharted/Tomb Raider-style treasure hunt adventure where everyone has at least one secret.

That was my favorite part. In the story, the heroine Isla is told that she is surrounded by lies and liars and will be cursed when it is not true. Every time I thought I knew what a person’s position was or what their motivation was, the story twisted and you saw people very differently.

As for the audio, Suzy Jackson does an absolutely phenomenal job with the narration and really brought the whole world to life. Despite struggling with questionable story logic, I quite enjoyed Lightlark. Many thanks to RB Media and NetGalley for allowing me to listen and review an advanced copy of the audio version of the Lightlark book.

Crown Island (our FMC) – strong, resilient, stubborn, beautiful, intelligent, cunning, loving, adventurous, resourceful, loyal, trusting and at times a little naive… Ruler of Wildling. You are engraved in my heart forever. She is a female character that is now part of my soul. I connected to her on many levels. It will FOREVER be a part of who I am and I guarantee you will be too as you read it.

Gold (our first MMC) – insufferable, loyal, leader, strong, wise, powerful, suspicious, aloof, magnificent, golden ruler of Lightlark and Sunling!!!! Let me tell you that I’m so SIMP for this man. He respectfully strangled me and I’m glad I’m there. His character development was pure perfection throughout the book.

Grimshaw aka Grim (our second MMC) – morally grey, dark-haired, powerful, sarcastic, flirtatious, brooding, strong and cunning ruler of Nightshade! He’s another character I’m absolutely obsessed with. His character is very complex and I couldn’t get enough of him.

The secondary characters were very necessary to the story. Even if they annoyed and annoyed me so much. They just put everything in its place.

Alex feels like a pure goddess with her writing in Lightlark. It’s ALREADY a dark fantasy, and when I refer to ALREADY, that’s because Isla and some other characters are younger…the rest of the characters aren’t. Lightlark is reminiscent of The Hunger Games; But then again, that’s not really the only reason they look the same when playing and testing. But all of Alex’s ideas are original. I’ve never read a novel such like this before.

It’s beautiful and poetic. There is no download of information, which is a great advantage. Because a lot of fantasy novels do this. Everything came out totally organically and what can I say Lightlark is a MASTERPIECE. I literally don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoil anything. I want you to read, feel and discover everything I have done. Please read it and lose yourself like me in this world.

Suzy Jackson narrated the book. She was so relaxing and calming. And the tone of his voice would rise at the right moments. The guys voice wish it was a little deeper but that doesn’t stop you from listening.
