When you read the synopsis of this book, you immediately think that the title “The Challenge” refers to the terrible episode that the 7 children had to go through on the mountain. You would be partly right.

Although the mountain plays a fundamental role in uniting all families, I think the title refers to all of the daily challenges we all face. Some are big, like death, divorce, and substance abuse (all also themes in this story), others are smaller, like a teenager’s fear of starting a new school. People learn about themselves and in turn open up to others.

I wasn’t sure if I would like this book. The beginning was a bit tough for me, the author carefully introduced all the characters and their backgrounds. However, once it got going I was hooked and enjoying it. I’m glad I stuck with it.

The setting is Fishtail, Montana, a small, close-knit community of 478 people. After providing backstories for all key characters, the focus shifts to 7 children who set out on horseback for a picnic at a favorite spot on Granite Peak in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains. What begins as a quiet afternoon turns into a survival challenge when the group is stranded after a flash flood. After three terrifying days with little food and water, the group is reunited with their families with great relief that no one was seriously injured or lost.

The second half of the book examines the lasting effects of the event. In typical Danielle Steel fashion, there is plenty of drama as relationships form and dissolve, families deal with love, loss, betrayal and forgiveness, and the entire make-up of the town changes.

One thing I like about this author’s books is the opportunity to escape into a quick and fun read. I found the characters believable as they not only struggled with the stress of missing children but also with the challenges that we all face in everyday life.

Tom, Beth and their daughter Julie live in New York and Tom doesn’t like living there or living his life there anymore. He wants everyone to move to Fishtail, Montana. Beth is for the fast life and thinks she needs to grow up. They decide to divorce and Tom moves to Montana. It’s a simpler life, more relaxed and he loves being there.

When Julia comes to visit for a few weeks, she loves it too and makes friends quickly.
Anne and Pitt Pollock, local nobles, high school friends and owners of the successful Pollock ranch.
Bill and Pattie Brown own the nearby ranch and the 4 are friends.

His sons Peter Pollock and Matt Brown are also best friends. When she and two other local children meet Juliet Marshall, new to town after her parents’ acrimonious divorce, the five soon become inseparable, spending their summer days swimming, horseback riding, hiking and fishing.
But one August afternoon, their latest adventure takes a dangerous turn and quickly turns into a struggle for survival when they are trapped on Granite Peak.

Wow! For young teenagers, they are very smart and need to learn to survive. The whole community comes together to find the children. I sat down and read it as fast as I could because I wanted to see if everyone would make it.
