Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his loving wife of one year: protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly who the note refers to: Owen’s 16-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who tragically lost her mother when she was only a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing from her new stepmother.

When Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, when the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, when a federal marshal and federal agents arrive unannounced at their Sausalito home, Hannah quickly realizes that her husband he is not who he says he is. FASCINATING. The tension was so intense. I never lost interest in this book… not for a second. I was fascinated to the end.

“One way or the another, this is the deal we all sign when we love someone. For better or worse. It’s the deal we have to keep signing to keep this love alive. We don’t turn our backs on the parts of someone we love.” we don’t want to see. How quickly or how long it takes to see them. We accept them if we’re strong enough. Or we accept them enough that we don’t let the bad parts become the whole story.”

PROTECT THEM. Hannah and Owen Michaels are a happily married couple living on a houseboat in Sausalito, California. Hannah is a woodturner and Owen works for a technology company. Owen has a 16-year-old daughter named Bailey from a previous marriage. His ex-wife was killed in a car accident when Bailey was young. Bailey doesn’t like her stepmother very much. One day, Hannah knocks on the door of a boy at school who hands her a note from Owen: “PROTECT HER.” Hannah tries to reach Owen on the phone, but he doesn’t answer.

She call after call after call she goes unanswered. He is not coming home tonight. Meanwhile, the company he works for, The Shop, is under investigation by the FBI and its CEO, Avett Thompson, has been arrested. The next morning, a US Marshal from Austin, Texas knocks on the door looking for Owen. Where is the Owen and what has he gotten himself into? And why the US Marshal from Texas and not from California?

Hannah and Bailey begin to delve into Owen’s past and present. They soon begin to realize that the Owen they knew may have lived a very different life than the one they were led to believe he lived in the past.

Wow just wow! This mystery completely captivated me. I read each page as fast as I could. I wanted to know who Owen was. There were so many twists and turns. I never thought the story would end the way it did. I loved it.

“That’s the terrible thing about tragedy. It’s not with you every minute. You forget it and then you remember it again. And you look at it with a strong quality: that’s what’s being asked of you now, just to get ahead.”
