Karen Hamilton packs a punch in this psychological thriller that will leave you uncomfortable and wondering what secrets are hidden. She is able to frame the story from a protagonist’s point of view, leaving him intrigued and desperate for more by turning page after page. I’m definitely a fan of his work now and look forward to more.

This is the story of three friends who had secrets from a vacation years ago that nobody talks about.

Nina and Marie were best friends; At least that’s what Marie thought when Nina was diagnosed with an incurable disease that ended her life. After being friends for so long, Marie’s life is essentially intertwined with Nina’s life and she begins to take care of the household, helping Nina’s grieving husband and their children to run their household and trying to bring some normality back to her life. But some think Marie is reaching out for solace. This leads to Marie’s boyfriend leaving her and Marie eventually moving in with Nina’s family.

The threats start pouring in and out of nowhere Camilla, Nina and Marie’s friend, appears. The last time she was seen was on the night of her vacation all those years ago. With all of the mysteries and truths coming out on this last night, Marie feels in danger everywhere. And after finding out so much that Nina was hiding from him.

But Marie is not so innocent. She wanted a family of her own and would do anything to get what she wants.

It’s a page turner, so bend your fingers because you won’t want to put it down.

Marie Langham promised her best friend while Nina lay on her deathbed that she would let nothing, including gossip, disapproval and threats, stand in the way of fulfilling Nina’s last wishes. However, Marie is a worried, insecure woman who is desperate to fit in with Nina’s old friends and is devastated that she couldn’t conceive.

Marie puts her own life on hold to help Nina’s widowed husband and their children adjust to life without Nina, but someone is unfazed by her efforts to break into Nina’s life. Who is threatening Marie and the secrets that Nina and Marie kept will now put Marie in danger?

I loved The Perfect Girlfriend so I was looking forward to reading this domestic thriller by the same author. Marie has the same ability to make you flinch at her questionable decisions as the main character did in Hamilton’s previous book.

However, “The Last Wife” is actually a little less over the top and less fun to read. That said, I was intrigued by where the story was going. There were so many unsavory characters in the book that it was hard to tell who was lying and who was telling the truth. Marie admits early on that “there’s always a reason to lie,” so it’s not surprising that her version of past events changes as the story progresses. Despite her lies and misdeeds, I like Marie and hoped that somehow she could get out of Nina’s shadow and find the happiness she was looking for.

The book was a quick read and kept me interested throughout the story. Marie has a lot of “be careful what you wish for” moments in the book, but I liked the way things ended. The book is unique enough to stand out from the many domestic thrillers and thrillers and I will continue to follow this author.
