The Shelters of Stone open as Ayla and Jondalar, along with their animal friends Wolf, Whinney and Racer, complete their epic journey across Europe and are greeted by Jondalar’s people: the Zelandonii. The people of Ninth Cave of Zelandonii fascinate the Ayla.

Their clothing, customs, artefacts and even their houses, which are shaped into large vertical limestone cliffs, are a source of wonder for them. And in the female Zelandoni, spiritual leader of the ninth cave (and the one whom Jondalar initiated into the gift of joy), he meets a healer with whom he can share his knowledge and skills.

But as Ayla and Jondalar prepare for their formal pairing at the Summer Gathering, difficulties arise. Not all Zelandonii are welcoming.

Some fear Ayla’s unknown ways and hate her association with what they call Flatheads, calling them Clan. Some even refuse to be mated with Jondalar, venting their anger. Ayla must use all of her skills, intelligence, knowledge and instinct to navigate this complicated society, prepare for the birth of her child and decide if she wants to take on new challenges and play an important role in destiny. the Zelandonian.

Jean Auel is at its best in this beautifully structured creation of a prehistoric society. The Shelters of Stone is a stirring tale of love and danger, with all the wonderful details – based on meticulous research – that make her novels unique. It is a successful continuation of the Earth’s Children® saga that began with Clan of the Cave Bear. And it contains an amazing rhythmic poem that describes the birth of the children of the earth and has its own part in the narrative of The Stone Shelters.

First, let me say that all the critics are right about this book. The characters are wooden, the anthropological details are excruciating, the action moves at the speed of a snail in a blizzard, and the main character Ayla has become a perpetual know-it-all and generally perfect creature, quite annoying to say the least.

And then there are the sex scenes. They’re extremely graphic, but rather off-putting, probably because they’re so routine and lacking in humor. In general, any sex scene that references any body part with “kinks” is usually pretty unsexy. My dear wife Auel, folding paper and folding clothes. If I or anyone else I know has had sensitive parts of their anatomy that are flexing, I would suggest immediate medical attention. In fact, anyone reading these cheesy, unwieldy, unsexy, terrifying love scenes needs medical attention because they’re likely to die laughing.

Did I say routine and humorless? Hmmm, that’s the whole book, right? And while I’m well aware that some ancient civilizations could rival modern ones in terms of sophistication, Mrs. Auel’s Paleolithic society seems populated by serious liberal arts graduates embarking on an experiment in community life and alternative religion. While I don’t claim to know everything about the Paleolithic, I doubt it will look that much like a New Age Craft Collective.

Everyone is polite, clean, smooth and good looking. Except for the villains, who are the only characters in the book with real teeth. For my part, I really liked Brukeval. I liked him a lot more than Ken, I mean Jondalar. If there’s a character with less personality that’s more nauseating than Ayla, it’s our favorite hulking himbo from yesterday. Him and his whole cardboard family and their luxurious multi-bedroom cave dwellings.

Multi bedroom condos? Herbal contraception? Sensitive, politically correct men and the majestic, wise matriarchs who produced them? No war, no conflict of any kind, not even a fistfight or a family feud? Quiet, clean kids and responsible, well-behaved teenagers, all despising the local scumbag trailer family, complete with drunk scumbag mom and Welfare King dad?

Who do you think you’re kidding, Ms. Auel? What became of the human race to become the whiny, quirky, rebellious, ultra-violent, yet creative and diverse species of monkeys in pants that we are today?

Um, as a historian, I daresay I don’t think so.

Yes, friends and neighbors, this book, like all post-Clan of the Cave Beat series, is boring, repetitive, and utterly unrealistic junk.

and i loved it

I love all of these books. I love them because they’re escapist cheesy unrealistic crap, although I have to admit that I skip most of the sex parts and the botany lessons. I find it odd that so many readers should condemn this latest book in the series for the sins mentioned above, when every book since Cave Bear has been full of them.

A real flower in the dustbin, a tacky, vulgar and pompous classic of its kind. We hope the penultimate book is just as charmingly awful, divinely ridiculous and entertainingly bad!
