This is the third book in the fascinating Winterlight trilogy. Please note that it is important to read the other two books in the series before reading this one.

If you remember from the ending of Book 2, The Girl in the Tower, Vasya and Sasha manage to escape from custody to help the Grand Duke of Moscow fight against usurpers. Vasya saves her niece Marya from the clutches of the sorcerer Kasyan with the help of her grandmother Tamara’s spirit. However, when Vasya takes Solovey from the stables of the Prince of Moscow, he sees Kasyan’s golden mare there.

The mare is the first horse she has ever feared, and in anger she tears the mare’s golden bridle off. To her amazement, the mare transforms into a firebird and flames leap up and spread throughout the city. Frost Demon responds to Vasya’s call for help, causing a blizzard to douse the flames. However, the snow comes too late to prevent some homes from burning and some lives are lost as well.

In The Witch’s Winter, Book 3 of the trilogy, the handsome priest Father Konstantine, sensing Vasya’s rejection of his advances, turns the people against her. He has given up his search for God but holds to an impeccable Christian faith. In hopes of gaining power over the city, he makes a pact with the devil. People worship him and follow him blindly. He accuses Vasya of setting fire to Moscow. With the help of the angry mob, the priest grabs her and puts her in a locked cage set on wood for burning.

Using her new power of invisibility, Vasya escapes from the cage and is led out of the area with the help of the Midnight Demon. Race through Midnight (where it’s always Midnight) and learn the story of her grandmother, Tamara, who passed on her gift of clairvoyance to Vasya.

Vasya continues to help fight the Tatur invaders who want to dominate all of Russia. She shows great courage and daring as a warrior.

Love grows between Vasya and Morozoko, the frost demon, but Vasya also asserts her independence.

She helps Morozoko chain up her brother, The Bear, who is fomenting chaos, violence, and madness. Vasya seeks out the bear some time later to help in the war against the Taturs. She makes him swear allegiance to her and threatens to chain him with the magical golden bridle if he misbehaves.

Vasya becomes a force in its own right alongside The Bear or Frost Demon. She will inherit a kingdom and she is truly a warrior princess.

This is a very exciting series. This last book is even more fairytale like than the first two and the reader has to lose faith more often. But the story is captivating and I was irresistibly drawn to it.

Vasya’s story is based on the Russian fairy tale Vasya the Beautiful. The author has done a great deal of research and writes with lyrical beauty.

This is a great series for young adults and older adults. A female heroine like the Vasya is a good role model for the women. She’s not perfect and sometimes not as friendly as she was at the beginning of the series, but she’s intriguing and personable.
