Well written, complex and intricate, the story of Things We Do in the Dark is captivating and full of surprises and heartbreak. It’s also an unbeatable psychological thriller. This intricate web of relationships, deceptions, and lies is told through flashbacks and the perspectives of various characters. The timeline also jumps back and forth between past and present, and includes a couple of big unexpected plot twists. What is revealed is Paris’ relationship with Jimmy in the present, but also all of her past relationships while she was growing up in Canada.
As a character-driven drama, Things We Do in the Dark stands out. All the characters are presented as real people, protagonists and antagonists. There are characters that you will support and feel sorry for, and there are characters that you will actively despise. Paris is a fascinating and likeable character. But as she sits in a prison cell and she goes through it all, she realizes that she should have known she couldn’t escape what she always had.
In Toronto, Drew Malcolm, a former true crime journalist and podcaster, is outraged. Ruby Reyes, the woman who killed her lover and is responsible for the death of Drew’s childhood friend Joelle “Joey” Reyes, is out on parole. Drew wishes that he could do something to keep the Ruby in the prison. At the very least, he plans to focus his next episode on Ruby and make sure people know she’s a criminal. However, as he digs deeper into Ruby’s story, he discovers some inconsistencies with the accepted truth. Drew muses that there may be more to Joey’s story than he thought. Perhaps even though she is dead, she can still see justice done.
Time is running out for Paris, both with the authorities and on a personal level. Ruby somehow found out the truth about who Paris really is and blackmailed her. As Paris and Drew deal with their individual crises, they will eventually discover that their paths have crossed. They will all face the harsh truths of their circumstances and what led them to make the decisions they did.
Author Jennifer Hillier’s novel will have readers swiping or turning the pages. Despite the mystery at the heart of the story about Paris’ identity and how she might be connected to Drew, Hillier takes the time to delve into the characters, their lives, and why even they are the way they are. While some of the decisions seem predictable, they’re no less amusing when it comes to how the characters arrive at the book’s major conflicts.
By setting the novel in both Seattle and Toronto, Hillier challenges the status quo of having celebrities live and move around Los Angeles, and the choice works. She is also a reminder that celebrities are human at heart, just like everyone else. Hillier makes this clear through the conversations Paris and Jimmy have. Though Jimmy has his fair share of flaws, Hillier allows him to redeem himself through her relationship with Paris in flashbacks.
It would have been helpful to categorize the story earlier to learn about the ethnicities of the characters; Paris is Filipino and Drew is black. Hillier’s decision not to offer the information sooner might take a bit out of the story for some readers, leading them to reaffirm the information they’ve already absorbed with what’s to come.
Hillier should be applauded for wanting to make his characters’ ethnicities an element of the who they are rather than the only way to identify them, but the readers from those communities would have the opportunity to develop an affinity with the characters before they feel, perhaps once appreciate. .
Those who like a thriller that takes a more measured approach to an inevitable ending will like this book.
