With a Scarlett O’Hara-esque heroine and exotic, glamorous locations, When We Left Cuba is a companion book to Next Year In Havana. It is not necessary to read both books, but it helps to understand the plot; It will help the reader understand the passion that drives Beatriz to do what she does.
Beatriz Pérez was a teenager when she fled Cuba with her family in the early 1960s. As the daughter of a Cuban sugar baron, she is used to the privileged life that her beauty and social position give her. law. But during the family’s exile to Palm Beach, the family is only tolerated by the elite.
Before leaving Cuba, Beatrice witnesses firsthand the consequences of defying Castro when the body of her revolutionary-minded twin brother is dumped in front of the family home. At that moment, she swears revenge on Castro and promises to work for a free Cuba. Through private channels, Beatriz is approached by the CIA, which tries to use her as a weapon against Fidel. Seeing a way to help her country and avenge her brother’s death, she agrees to work with the CIA.
Against her better judgment, Beatrice begins an affair with a prominent member of society who is running for re-election to the United States Senate and is a personal friend of presidential candidate Jack Kennedy. Her on-and-off romance sustains Beatrice throughout her spy career and guides her through the betrayal of a family friend. In short, a story that spans generations of family heritage and courage.
I couldn’t put this book down for a number of reasons, mainly because I lived through that time and vividly remember much of what happened. Mrs. Cleeton makes her characters jump off the page and immerse you in the story, taking the reader on a wild ride from the high-society events of Palm Beach to the shores of dying Havana. Rich in historical detail, captivating and thought-provoking. Do not miss this!
For me, Beatriz was the most fascinating of the sisters. She was the twin who survived, described as the most beautiful of the sisters and the one who didn’t seem to care about the rules of society in general. Cleeton dropped a lot of hints about Beatrice as she told Elisa’s story, so I felt like we were going to have a great and captivating saga with this book. It wasn’t “feeling” but it was a great story.
Beatrice’s twin brother was killed by Castro’s soldiers, we learned about it in Book 1, and it seemed like she was out for revenge. While she was in Palm Beach with the American elite, she also worked with the CIA on a plot to kill Castro. With Cleeton unable to change history, we clearly know the plan failed. In the process, she won the affections of two men, neither of whom could win her heart.
As a lover of romance, she was disappointed that she didn’t find the love of her life, but for Beatriz, her destiny lay elsewhere.
Beatrice’s story was truly one of determination that took my breath away.
