Half Lost is The third and final installment in Sally Green’s impressive Half Bad series.

Nathan Byrn is running again. The Free Witch Alliance was almost destroyed. Dispersed and demoralized, constantly hunted by the Council Hunters, only a bold new strategy can save the rebels from total defeat. You need the missing half of Gabriel’s Amulet, an ancient artifact with the power to make its wielder invincible in battle.

But the amulet’s keeper, the reclusive and incredibly powerful witch Ledger, has plans of her own. In order to gain her trust, Nathan must travel to America and persuade her to give him the amulet. Combined with her own gifts, the amulet could be enough to turn the tides of the alliance and end the bloody civil war between the black and white witches once and for all…

It’s going to be difficult to write a review about it without spoiling something, but I’ll do my best. Because this ending to one of my favorite YA fantasy series deserves a really good review.

Given how much I loved HALF BAD and HALF WILD, I had high hopes for HALF LOST. He was willing to see a relationship he despised crumble and burn; I was ready to see the relationship blossom that I’ve been wanting to see since the first book; He was ready to see Nathan come into his own and become the truly powerful warlock that everyone had known all along would be.

I have all that and more.

The character development in this book is truly amazing; First, Nathan went to the extremely dark side. His obsession with getting back at someone was so intense it was unsettling, and watching him transform from book one into this dark and hurt person was justifiably difficult to read. My heart ached for him and for Gabriel, who stood by his side in pain as he saw someone he cared about so much transform into this unrecognizable person.

Half Lost is as dark and raw as HALF BAD and HALF WILD. There were moments that made me cringe and images that were hauntingly alive. Green does not shrink or shy away from the harsh realities of war; it’s visible to everyone on the site and I found it incredibly powerful.

Speaking of powerful, this book almost made me cry twice. As I’ve said in my other reviews, I’m not one to cry easily; To this day I have never collapsed over a book. But there was one moment in the book that made me so happy it brought tears to my eyes, and the other…well, I won’t spoil it, but I will say if I hadn’t taken a break, there is a good chance I would have cried about it. Completely at the end of the book.

There are many people who disagree with something that ends up happening and I understand their complaints. But I think it’s important to say that I think what happened was handled very cleverly and totally fits the story; As another reviewer said, it felt inevitable. And to me, at least, it seemed like a very powerful and beautiful ending to a wonderfully memorable YA fantasy series.

Overall, the Half Bad series remains on my favorites list. I really enjoyed the variety of characters woven into the story, from a bisexual and multiracial protagonist with a learning disability to a gay main character and not one but two gender non-conforming characters, and even more so, the Half Bad series is one I will continue to recommend to those who enjoy (very) dark fantasies and a story that will break them up and bring them back together.

I just have to say that I really enjoyed this book, although I cried myself to sleep for three nights after reading it and I probably have no soul left. Nathan’s character development was beautiful as throughout the book he learns to love and care for people and generally becomes a better person.

I also loved how in the beginning and middle of the story you could see the darkness in him when he wanted to kill and get revenge on Annalize. But later you can see his softer side through his interactions with Gabriel (who is probably my favorite character and the main reason this book completely devastated me).

The relationship between Nathan and Gabriel was pretty much the focus of this book, and while many said they wanted more detail, I felt it was well written and in line with the style of the rest of the book, without making the whole book the focal point. about the two of them and the fact that they are in a gay relationship.

I didn’t enjoy some of the other parts of the book that much (THE END WAS AROUND ME OK), and while the ending ended well (in a good or bad way, I’m still not sure), I felt like the whole thing with Annalize and Edge could have been explained better (or maybe I cried too hard to read idek at the time). Overall I’d recommend the book if you enjoyed the first two, but with fair warning if you’ve grown very fond of the main characters as you’ll probably be crying on the floor somewhere (I speak from experience).
