The vision has haunted him for four years: a young woman huddled together, her hand outstretched in silent supplication. Harry Bosch was removed from the Angella Benton murder case when the production assistant’s death was linked to the violent theft of $2 million from a movie set.

Both files were never closed. Bosch, who has since left the L.A.P.D. he is determined to find justice for Angella. Without a badge to open doors and scare off the guilty, he is alone. And even facing an opponent more powerful and ruthless than any he’s ever faced, Bosch won’t back down.

Harry Bosch, private investigator??? Really??? No more Los Angeles Police Department detectives, Harry Bosch? Hard to believe for us longtime readers of the series, but I think we have to accept it.

After 28 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, Harry Bosch has resigned from him. In the last book, City of Bones, Harry left his badge and his gun behind and left the police station with the intention of retiring, but I never thought he would stay. He was sure that he would be back in the saddle in the next book. Well, he is, but he’s a different horse.

When this book begins, Harry is fifty-two years old and retired a few years ago, and he’s getting a little nervous. When he left LAPD, he took with him some of his case files, cold cases that he couldn’t solve. They are following him. His mission in his life has always been to be an advocate for murder victims, to give them some justice. It is irritating that he has not been able to provide that justice in these particular cases.

One case is particularly troublesome. A young woman named Angella Benton, a production assistant at a movie studio, was murdered four years earlier, and Bosch is still haunted by the memory of her tainted body lying on the tiled entryway of the apartment building. she. Needing something to occupy her mind and his time, he decides to re-investigate the case from the beginning and finally eliminate the killer.

This story is told from the perspective of the first person, so we are present in Harry’s mind at all times and are aware of his thoughts. It’s an interesting and slightly different perspective than the previous books.

As we follow Harry’s thought processes, we learn pretty quickly that something isn’t quite right. Something about the original research seems to be wrong. He visits one of the policemen who led the investigation after Harry was removed from it. The former police officer is now a quadriplegic after being injured in a bar shooting that took place just months after Angella’s murder.

Other coincidences begin to rear their heads. Two million dollars was stolen from the set of a movie produced by the studio where Angella worked. This also happened within a few weeks of her death.

Also, around this time, an FBI agent who was in charge of a financial investigation and checking the serial numbers of the stolen bills disappeared. She was never found, dead or alive.

It’s too much of a coincidence, and Harry’s gut tells him that she really isn’t.

As usual, his instincts are correct. He begins to connect the various crimes and finally finds more than he bargained for. But more importantly, he finds some justice for the murdered in Harry Bosch’s world.

This was a very interesting entry in this series. Seeing Harry from a different perspective added even more depth to a character that was already fully developed in my mind. He was tired of the politics and tedious bureaucracy of the police department, but he had done this job for over 25 years and it was, in many ways, home to him.

In fact, many days it seemed like it was all he had to do in his life. He is now looking from the outside in, and as long as he remains true to his mission, his calling in life, he must fulfill it without the protection of the insignia. It is a new and strange world for him. and for us

One thing Harry hasn’t lost is his contacts. There’s his former partner Kiz Rider, who has a role to play in his new investigation. There’s Roy Lindell, the FBI agent he previously worked with. And there’s his ex-wife, Eleanor Wish, the former FBI agent who now gambles for a living in Las Vegas. Harry still cares for her and hopes that he can be with her again. She, at the same time, seems to be hiding something from him. Harry and we only find out what it is at the end.

Michael Connelly is just excellent at putting his plans together, throwing clues along the way, and making us see and empathize with his characters. Not only Harry, but also the secondary characters. Perhaps the most important thing about these stories is that he has a real taste for Los Angeles, for the checkered history of the Los Angeles Police Department and for the bureaucratic back-and-forth between different law enforcement agencies, in this case the FBI and police.

Last but not least, he has a feeling for the English language. It is a pleasure to read the words he writes.
