Michael Connelly’s The Night Fire brings us together with Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch. Bosch is now essentially done with the San Fernando Police Department and Ballard continues to serve as a Hollywood cop. The book begins with a phone call that leads Ballard to a homeless camp where one of its residents appears to have caught fire. Something about the victim and the way she died bothers Ballard, but it doesn’t stop him from referring the case to the fire department’s arson investigators.

Returning to the station at the end of his shift, he discovers that the radio station that normally broadcasts the news is now playing jazz and there is an old murder book on his desk.
This is classic Michael Connelly through and through. He’s one of my favorite authors, and this one brings things together without resorting to some of the clever surprises that popped up in his earlier novels.

The widow of a police officer who mentored Bosch early in his career gave him the murder file after her husband’s funeral, and Bosch needs Ballard’s help to break into the department. So they team up again and try to hide Harry’s involvement from the authorities, lest the evidence uncovered be corrupted.

s in other books about the couple, past victims cry out for justice, secrets are revealed, and the memories of men and women are altered.
The story is divided into chapters that focus on either Ballard or Bosch as they work through their cases and collect evidence. They share most of the evidence uncovered and withhold some details.
Connelly is up to her game for the most part, dropping the leads one by one and enlightening us on internal police policies, practices and jargon. His ear for criminals is also well known. The dialogue between gangsters being caught is believable and well written.

This brings up one of the problems of the book. For the most part, language is conveyed as profanely as in real life. Common use of the F-word, Effer-word, and S-word spelled out in full and in full; leave my pristine eyes undisturbed. When it comes to the N-word, it gets censored as “my n_____”. Now I don’t know who or why this sudden sensitivity arose, whether it was Connelly, his publisher or agent. Every time it happens it just stops the story while I think about why Connelly can’t do Tarantino.

I know Connelly has been incorporating intersectional observations and characters into her novels for some time. That’s easy to miss. But when you have to censor the word Mark Twain used, it just sticks out like a sore thumb, taking you out of the story and making readers like me think about things I shouldn’t be thinking about when reading a novel . If this novel is woven into the Harry Bosch Prime series, will the N-word beep when all the other swear words are uttered without fear of hurting my delicate ears? This is a bad trend.

I won’t let him lower my rating but if this develops in the future I might have to reconsider Connelly. If Connelly finds the word n_____ beyond usage, then why write about the Crips and the Rolling 60s or any black characters? This tries to have it in two ways. Write it or not. Value and truth matter.
